      I can see one.

Many fundies don't share the pro-business obsession of the typical Repugs. Simply because many of them are working class. Hence the Repugs have to give them a bone to chew on, so that they don't resume voting for the Dems as they used to in the past.

Anyone care to tell me more of what he stands for?
How much of the crime reduction is based on what Giuliani did and how much was based on other factors is an inetresting question. The big surge in police numbers that gave him the manpower to tackle crime was the result of his predecessor Dinkins. Compstat, the crime statistics system that helped the police in allocating resources more effectively, and some of the aggressive street tactics used by the Department were the result of William Bratton's work, but Giulini canned him when he became too popular for Giuliani's liking. Then of course, there was the end of the crack epidemic to think about in terms of lowering crime. Obviously the attention Giuliani paid to the issue and the uncompromising stance on quality of life issues helped bring crime down.

The problem is that Giuliani can;t stand criticism. Anything he didn;t like he attacked with vehemence. Not a very 'presidential' demeanor.

The fundie leaders on the other hand do share that obsession. Did you know that there are baptist churches that have expelled members who vote for Democrats?

I understand your point, but I think you underestimate how many blue-collar folks in this country remain economically conservative in spite of what might seem to be their immediate interests. They've been so thoroughly inculcated with notions of the 'American dream' since childhood that when they personally fail, they assume it must have been due to some mistake of their own and accept their 'place.' Counterintuitive I know, but unsurprising to me from a glance at both poll stats and personal acquaintances.

I don't think fundies are much anti-business. They like their authority, as long as it isn't anti-Christian.

Just out of curiosity (and having nothing whatsoever to do with your avatar), have you noticed your cat having supernatural powers---say, like the ability to see through walls and to shoot down birds with laser beams from its eyes?

                            Yet two more observations:

                            1) The people in this thread who seem to place the most stock in Rudy's mayoral performance are not Americans (Pekka, Brachy-Pride, Nikolai) . That's not surprising, since in other parts of teh world -- Europe especially -- running your country's largest city counts for something. But Americans actually hate their cities so this may give Rudy much less traction that he's hoping for.

                            2) In every election since 1976, the winning candidate has been the one who seemed more like "just folks." This was true even in races where nobody pulled that off well (Bush-Dukakis) and races where more than one candidate did (Clinton-Dole). Wherever presidents come from, however well they're educated, whatever they've done with their lives, we seem to want to believe that, in the end, they're really just regular joes from some small town in the Midwest, somebody whose idea of a fun Saturday night involves his family, the front porch, some lemonade, and maybe a game of Yatzee. It'll be interesting to see whether Rudy's handlers try to remake him in that image, and whether people buy it.
