Usually it isn't. Most likely there is some source of infection in my body, no one is sure where though.
You probably have the viral version in which case antibiotics are no good and it will keep reappearing when you are stressed.

          Sure...

I have been away from my computer (and the internet) for awhile...

I still have a headache and have had one for 30 days now. The good news is that I haven't had a fever since the day after I got out of the hospital. I have an appointment on Wednesday and I will hear then if it's this CMV or not. If it is, well then I guess I have about 3 more weeks of headaches. If it isn't, then I will probably go to the University of Madison Hospital for a second opinion.

Man, this really blows. I would imagine the not knowing would be the worst part.

Sorry to hear you're still under the weather, Don. I hope you get better soon.

What's the deal with CMV? Treatment?

                    Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Unfortunately, the main treatment is time and meds for the symptoms (in my case, IBU for the fever and Percocet for the pain).

The virus that causes CMV is part of the herpes virus family and, like other herpes viruses, may become dormant for a period of time and then be reactivated. CMV affects young children mainly, but it is estimated that by age 30 in the United States, half of all adults are, or have been, infected.

Well, the test came back positive for CMV.

                        I finally have a diagnosis!
My headache will probably continue for another 2 weeks!
                        My fever is gone!
I'm going back to work Sunday night! (first time since Jan 28th)

Now let me explain some things about CMV. Yes, as Arrian pointed out, about 50% of the population has CMV by the time they are 30. However, not all infections of CMV effect everybody the same way. A majority of the infections are called "sub-clinical", where symptoms are very mild or not felt at all. Additionally, the younger you are when you get infected, the less sever the infection (similar to measles or chicken pox). I somehow had managed to avoid getting infected until early Febuary 2007 when I was close to 33 years old. This fact combined with the appearent fact that my body was predisposed to react badly to the virus is what caused me to have such a bad reaction.

Anyway, I now have the antibodies to CMV and I shouldn't have a reoccurance.
