  • Having Algore preach energy conservation is like listening to Pat Robertson extoll the virtues of an austere lifestyle

    Comment

    • Quoting Wikipedia? Me, I prefer getting my information on this straight from the horse's mouth.

That blogger's error was looking just at the number of plants instead of the energy they produce:
      How does TVA generate electricity?

Eleven coal-burning plants produce most of TVA’s electricity. Four of these plants and two freestanding sites also have combustion turbines, which burn natural gas or fuel oil. TVA has three nuclear plants, 29 hydroelectric dams, and one pumped-storage plant, and since April 2000 it has added energy from three renewable sources — sun, wind, and methane gas — to its power mix. In addition, eight Army Corps of Engineers dams and four Alcoa dams contribute to the TVA power system. Read more about TVA’s generation facilities.
But look through their site. They have a pretty good track record at reducing their own pollution.

I find it amusing how y'all are ignoring the blogger's other points, like how TN's climate is, you know, different from the national average climate and how that would drive energy costs differently. Then there's the point about how Mr. Gore's household isn't like the average household because he has a round-the-clock security detail and both he and his wife have offices plus staff there, so duh they'd be using more electricity.

I love how you guys are missing the forest for the trees in that HE OFFSETS HIS ENERGY USE AND REDUCES HIS OVERALL FOOTPRINT, unlike the average household ... unlike the vast majority of electricity-consuming households, for that matter.

Like the Wikipedia entry did? They had a link to the TVA webpage right after the section I quoted...

        • On that point yes. But how many of the other points have pwned you?

          • The man's an obvious hack and was completely wrong on the one point I chose to follow up on. The fact that you would link approvingly to such obviously partisan "talking points" says a great deal about your own worth as a reasonable commenter on events.

I dont care why he uses more energy, its still a rich man preaching austerity for others. Algore should travel the planet in limo caravans visiting the impoverished peoples waiting to benefit from industrialisation with his message of reducing pollution.

So is this so-called "non-partisan" TCPR, yet you freely take what they say at face value ... despite it being ripped to shreds. Facts in context counts and they blew it.

and was completely wrong on the one point I chose to follow up on.
You've committed a fairly gross fallacy here: Dismissing the whole for the part.

The amount of bull**** in this whole post of yours is astounding and shows that you know his other points are valid.

No, I don't; I'm not nearly as credulous as you are. In this case, however, what they've said about Gore is easily verifiable and has not been denied by the Gore camp. I wouldn't accept it without proof, but such proof exists.

Dismissing the whole for the part.

Sue me. I have no time for writers who can't be bothered to engage in even the most rudimentary of fact-checking...

                    • Until these people can tell me why I should fear a warmer world, I'm not too concerned with CO2 or other greenhouse gases. It all sounds like Chicken Little gibberish, dire predictions about weather one would not usually associate with a greenhouse effect.

Living in MI we get some unseasonable weather (this year it didn't drop below 50 until the middle of Jan). I love hearing people walk around talking about "global warming" casing this situation.

If global warming has gotten to the point that it changed the temprature 10-15F degrees we are all going to be dead by the end of the year!

                              • The larger point, which probably won't work well as a cable-show soundbite but is nonetheless true, is that Gore has done heroic work making global warming a top issue for governments the world over. He has prompted more individual and collective action on this issue than anyone else alive. The changes he has wrought outweigh his personal carbon emissions by many orders of magnitude.
So even if we don't believe his other arguements it doesn't matter because Gore is a god.

And I'm with Berz, until someone comes up with something concrete that I have to fear about a little global warming, I'm not willing to expend an extreme amount of resources to attack the issue.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple
