At least not from a country that is largely poorer than theirs, and where the average standard of living is much worse.

Especially when the country is Britain, i.e a place democratic enough for the implantation of a welfare system (which used to exist, until Thatcher, who got reelcted repeatedly, went on a rampage)

So you are saying the average Briton is poorer than the average Venezulan? Otherwise, its a subsidy from the poor to the rich. I thought you were normally against such movement .

Its just funny/odd for a country with much less relative wealth and many more intensely poor people using national resources to assist the (much better off) "poor" of a much richer nation.

So what? Chavez is hurting the income of Venezuela, which needs the money much, much more than London's poor people. This kind of policy reduces the amount of money available to invest in Venezuela's future, both in terms of civilian and of oil infrastructure.

I don't think so. There's inflation in Venezuela because of so much investment there.

Underscoring his point, he announced he is expanding his heating-oil program to help impoverished Americans from 40 million gallons last year to 100 million gallons this year, and from 180,000 families to 459,000 families.

Yet another of Chavez's publicity stunts. Western democracies could in return donate -- I don't know . . . food to the poor of venezuala but that would be a cheap publicity stunt too

Chavez really should be trying to better the situation of his own people

You might be surprised to learn that the welfare system does still exist in Britain, and in fact during Thatcher's time welfare spending increased substantially (as millions lost their jobs).
