Asher has a point, at least these days where I come from, a huge part of the degree is management. Not just project management, but general management, also business etc. Hey, if you're not done programming in your first few years, then there's a problem. It's not THAT difficult.

Useless jobs dont get paid that much because it helps no one. Since it helps no one, there is no demand for it. If there is no demande then you dont get paid much.

Pay charts are available to the public. But I will note that I made this the day I graduated, I didn't wallow around for a year looking for a job or decide to hide in grad school.
I made great money the day I graduated too, multiple offers before I got my degree...that's not unusual."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Actually KH, if you read back you will see that I was making a personal observation and not expressing any data about others.
And yes you're right, I believe that I would have been one of those tech weenies selected for management regardless. But it was beneficial in understanding people, which is quite helpful in management.
BUT a soft fluffy degree in poly sci or the arts does provide one measurable advantage. The art of cocktail parties. The degree provides you with the bare minimum needed to discuss artsy things and historical references that gains you entrance into their snobby little club. You don't have to be a member but appearing like you belong goes a long way toward advancing on the more nebulous management path. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. I'm going to guess he's O2 or O3 with 2 or 3 years of service, so a yearly pay of between 35 and 45 k
Average starting salary for engineers is slightly higher than that, by the way. After 2-3 years it's in the 65k range.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

I know. My beef with this topic is engineers. We have alot in the Navy and I get untold joy from pointing out that there technical degrees mean **** because their jobs are to manage people and, to their everlasting horror, write reports/breifs/summaries/professional papers. Anything technical they teach you when you get here.
What's really funny is how badly written this paragraph is.

They do have the advantage of utilizing that often forgotten medium of communication known as writing. It depresses me sometimes when my engineering friends don't know how to format a letter, or wrote a mission statement, or basically can't coherently state an idea because they never had to write a term paper.
I realize this is not all technical majors, but unfortunetly a very large number of them become simple number crunches without any critical thought ability.
Studying a junk subject that writes essays does not necessarily develop writing skills, and neither does a scientific or technical background automatically prevent someone from being able to write well. It's down to the individual.
