The problem a lot of people have, especially in Canada, is overpoliteness. They forgo being direct for being polite. It's a crime to make someone feel bad even if they did something that probably warrants it. And if we don't feel bad, we don't learn for next time.

Another related issue is smalltalk and typical politeness protocol. It's so stupid. Like every time someone calls to a radio show:
Host: "John from Halifax, what's your opinion?"
John: "Hi Bob, how are you?"
Host: "Fine John. What's your opinion?"

What is the point of asking how he is? You don't know the guy well, you don't honestly care. He's going to tell you the same stuff as always so as to not sidetrack the purpose of the conversation.

This happens all the time, especially with coworkers in the elevator or something. Dumb.

Just had another student email me calling me Mr McEvoy. I took pity on him and told him to call me Matt.

The big publishers don't want reasonable-sized texts. They can't justify charging 168$ (no word of a ****ing lie) for a 50 page text. That's why you see constant textbook expansion. And profs don't want to teach out of a text not pushed by the big publishers because of standardisation of course content.

This wouldn't be for my benefit, actually, since I'm not taking any physics courses (no reason to slog through any intro stuff to get to the interesting bits), but I hate the textbook publishers.

They're like the drug companies. They treat instructors really well because the important people are not the consumers of the texts (students) but the people who recommend the texts (instructors). While I was on the phone with the publishers you should have seen the customer service I got. I guess when you have 200*168 = 33600$ of income to send their way they take notice.

One extern coming through our courtroom was scared to death about taking the Bar exam (even though she was brilliant and had nothing to worry about). When she heard that none of our student externs had ever gone on to fail the Bar, she came running to me to ask if that were true.
