I make considerably more than the average starting salary of CS grads in North America. That's not including performance bonuses and profit sharing (which is significant, being a private company with a large % of profits dedicated to employee profit sharing).

I made a little over .. 11k last year, but then again that was from summer job. Pretty good in here, and more than the average pay for recently graduated in here.

Now, I'm making about 20k this year, but I'm working for the school so basically they are paying me to study. So that's pretty good considering the fact that I have no obligations what so ever, I just need to finish some work I'd do anyway, for free.

Well, I'll graduate after that, so I will not get a job that pays less than 40k, with some kind of benefits and great/promised opportunities for advancing fast. The reason is, I could go for the PhD, get it in few years and earn more than 40k a year while doing it.

So.. we'll see what happens. Or maybe I'll end up flipping burgers. The reason I won't go for less is because of the heavy taxes, so the actual income would be much less. So, anything less than 40k for starters means I could pay my rent, but no real savings, after taxes.

You misunderstood me. I'm not living with my parents, I'm living in another city, in a rented apartment. That 233 dollars covers everything except rent. Bills, food, and gas are all covered in that 233 dollars. Comfortably.

By the Gods of Kobol, $233 a month wouldn't even cover my rent.

It would barely cover half my monthly rent.

It's like a third of my rent.

But it's double my cable (TV+internet) bill.

My employer is privately owned so no stock options ( ) but they do have a nice profit sharing program which pays out $2k-$10k per year depending on how long you've been with the company, what your level is, and how generous the owner wants to be. All in all not bad. The 401k could be better but they do at least offer 100% matching on the first 2% of gross income and partial matching up to 5%. I'm socking away 15% so most of the savings will be my own but a little bit of free money is better then no free money.

The anwser to making more money seems to be to go into business for yourself. I know my brother in law really started raking in the money after he decided to go out on his own. He wrote code for three big clients and practically ran every step of the contracts for the company. His employer didn't want to give him the raise he wanted so he went free lance and the three big clients all hired him as a consultant since he wrote the code and had the information they needed. He now makes triple what he was making since all the money is now his instead of just a portion of that money.
His former employer didn't require him to sign a non-compete agreement? They are very common in the software industry, for this very reason.

My employer matches up to 5% of my gross in retirement savings. I save 7% under our program so thats 12% put away there. As well the employer contributes 8% of gross to a pension fund. Its nice not to have to worry about retirement savings at all

                            • And now we know

why everything is being outsourced to India. It is very hard to compete against that kind of cost structure.
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

                              • The question is whether the cheapness offsets the various difficulties involved in using Indian programmers. I gather that once the outsourcing gets going, all manner of little things crop up that reduce the benifit of the deal. It might still be worth it, of course, I don't know for sure.

What I do know is that most CIOs are going to see the cost savings and jump all over it, and downplay any problems.
