Yes, because we're once again in a war with Canada and the British Empire over maritime rights and free trade. How spookily prescient of Webster...

Poor Drake. No matter how plainly I try to write in English, you still seem lost in translation. Or is it you just can't help deliberately miscontruing what's written ?

Must be listening too much to Bushbonics.

I suspect Bushbaby can't tell metaphor from metonym, simile from semolina, literal from littoral....

Ah yes, those essentially French ideals of habeas corpus, individual liberty, and the rights of man, as expounded by those well-known Frenchmen, John Locke, Thomas Paine and Lord Mansfield.

But perhaps you mean the use of lettres de cachet by the Ancien Regime. Sentence without trial or defence and subsequent transportation and imprisonment.

France has done more for you than the UK has? Like what?

In the case of the Bourbon monarchy and Napoleon, how to act in an entirely arbitrary way with respect to the law, and get embroiled in unnecessary wars in far away places.

        ???

I don't get it. The maritime issues impacted NE by far the most severely, these people didn't really give a damn about it, yet the maritime issues were the real reason to go to war?
New England was willing to deal with impressment as long as they got to ship some of their goods. $$$ > impressment. They kind of wrote it off as a business expense.

But my point was during the colonial period it seemed that the Brits favored New England and thus later on New England was the pro-British area of the country. Even a few years after the end of the revolution, New England wanted to be friendly with Britain and against the French, who were the US's biggest allies in the Revolutionary War. The New England Federalists pushed hard on President Adams to declare war with France in the late 1790s.

Didn't they also 'discuss' separation in the 1812 War ?

Nantucket declared neutrality- there's unbridled enthusiasm.

Ah, so your way of arguing is to just insult the opponent rather than actually trading facts back and forth until one person's argument actually persuades the other that they are actually right?

                What's to argue?

France helped us win the Revolutionary War. And they sold us Louisiana.

Britain fought two wars against us, begged for our help against the Germans (twice) and think some troops in Iraq suddenly makes up for that.

It's quite clear which country has been a better friend to America.

So two events two hundred years in the past supersedes all the actions the US & UK have done together since?

And this is from the country that loves the French so much they extremely pettily renamed "French Fries" to "Freedom Fries" ?

                  Okay if you say so!

I was taught that the war of 1812 was a draw (with an otherwise occupied UK). We lost Washington, we burnt York, and then our biggest victory came after peace was signed, doh!

The casus belli was impressment, and perhaps I'm crazy but it seems valid to me.

Ya know, if ya troll somebody, and they dont bite, the proper thing to do is move on. Im sure Drake knows that. To go after someone for not responding to your troll is a tad obsessive, sir.

Yep. We owe our very existence as a country to the French. Nothing the UK has done for us has ever come close to that.

You're thinking of the Battle of Yorktown, which virtually ended the Revolutionary War.

The British fleet came out of the Cheaspeake and should have mauled the French, but screwed up, and the fighting on the first day slightly favored the French. Then Admiral de Grasse took off across the Atlantic with the Brits on his tail. But he eluded them, hung a U-Turn, came back, and blockaded the British Army at Yorktown, which then had to surrender.
