Could be. I think that only 10 year olds that has experienced a real hanging has any idea of what is going on.

...or by being a normal kid whose frontal lobe is not yet fully developed. The frontal lobe helps you envision the possible future outcome of a current activity. Since the frontal lobe isn't fully developed in childhood, this is could easily result in accidental deaths.

Nope, just that they really don't have a clue about the consequences.

As a kid I saw some clowns making the "move the chair" stunt and I tried the same thing against my aunt at a family dinner - noone found it especially funny.

Obviously, ten year olds often make poor decisions. But it strains credulity to believe that this kid had no idea that hanging results in death.

              Sad, though.

I don't buy it. I knew what death was as a kid. I knew you could die by hanging.

I fault the parents for not showing the kid more violent movies. . You can blame this on the fact that westerns aren't popular anymore. Kids just don't know what hanging is.

But I knew damn well the many methods of dying. I knew knives and guns were dangerous, and I knew you could die by hanging or falling a great distance.

And as some posters might point out. My frontal lobe still isn't fully developed.

He probably knew that hanging would cause death. What he likely didn't anticipate was that he could slip from the bed and fall while the noose was around his neck.

I'll buy that argument. It was an accident after all. And I can't expect everyone to mature at the same rate.

some kids are just more adventerous than others. Not everyone is the same. This kid could have surivived and maybe went on to ghost riding cars or something. It's just a freak accident.

I never thought about things like this because I knew what would happen if I slipped. I never got serious hurt. I have done some stupid things as a kid, but not dangerous things.

Some people just don't think of the danger. They'd make good stunt men when they grow up. Just a sad fact, some of them don't make it to adulthood.

Assuming that a lacking understanding of hanging was involved in this case, that's one ignorant kid. That hardly rises to the level of anecdotal data.

It seems that I'm not the only one that is left wondering here whether the humble western may have had a more profoundly beneficial impact on a childs education than I could have imagined possible.

Alternatively, there is something terribly wrong with the cotton-wool upbringing of kids today that they haven't got a damn clue about the basic physics of life and death.

I'm reminded of the '1973' thread, where Sloww posted some stuff which suggested that something has gone wrong with the world over the last 30+ years. Sloww was lambasted as a reactionary, although I felt there was a grain of truth in the sentiments he was trying to communicate. Somehow I think that this story fits in with the point he was trying to make - albeit a point which got hijacked by the baying mob accusing him of cheering on child abuse, which he surely wasn't.

Alternatively, this is just one stupid kid who would probably have wandered in front of a passing truck anyway.
