    • Powder cocaine is a salt consisting of the base cocaine and the acid HCl (hydrochloric acid)

Freebasing involves removing the acid, leaving only the base cocaine. I don't recall the details, but the process involves using ether at some point. This is dangerous. Crack doesn't require the use of ether, which is why it's preferred by drug dealers around the world.

I tend to think of Baltimore as liking Mint Juleps, with DC being more a Scotch and Soda town.

Or Baltimore liking Natty Boh, while DC is more a Sam Adams town.

Or Baltimore liking Seyval Blanc made by somebodys cousin in da county, while DC is more imported Merlot.

        But to each their own.

          • Don't get me wrong. I've never tried cocaine. And I do like to drink. But crunching on empty vials whenever I'm in a bad neighbourhood is an interesting experience.

            • Boordy, thats what I was thinking of. Boordy Wine Cellars. Ever been there? Not bad, actually.

Oh then there was a winery out in Carrol County run by a Jewish family that had been vinters in Poland.

Oh, and one parent in the baby group we were part of when POTM was teeny was Ted de Groen, proprietor of a microbrewery down near Little Italy and Museum Row. He made some very nice products, which he brought as adult refreshments to gatherings.

I do miss The Land of Pleasant Living.

Of course the whole area west of Broadway is a lot busier now that it was then. It all pretty much faded away before Central Avenue (maybe Bond is the street im thinking of) Thames was one of our favorite streets - you couldnt be on that?

Past Caroline it's sort of more dead

And yes, I'm about 100 feet up from Thames

Yup. Bond in those days was still only partially fixed up, and Caroline was where you got a little nervous parking your car. The development on the water between Bway and Bond (it was Constellation in those days) was just built.

Jimmys is still there I take it. And of course Bway Market, though i suppose its gone even further upscale.

South by Southwest must be gone though. We were there when it opened. And Ding How (I said, what this neighborhood needs is a Chinese rest, not another bar-crab house).

You see we lived at Tindeco, QOTM was really into power walks, and she always wanted to walk along the water (more or less, the promenade was much less complete then) to Fells Point and back. So we spent ALOT of time at the point.

O' Donnell street OTOH, which was practically out our door, was not gentrified at ALL. There was one decent pizza place, and a funny little ice cream parlor that didnt last.

                      • Caroline below Lancaster is now home to a pretty fancy condo building (~4 stories). Lancaster west of Caroline is full of new and partially-completed high-rise apartment buildings and condos.

Broadway market is not all that upscale. The Broadway square still caters to low-budget drinking.

The Canton square, on the other hand, is now much more preppified. I don't like going there for that reason, though Nacho Mama's is pretty good.

I don't think I ever said Bush is more worthy of admiration than Obama.

Anyway, good on Obama for that statement. If only he would let that be his consistent message...

even then Bway market had one really nice Cheese store, I think, and also a nice health food place, though I could be thinking of the same place, The cheap (largely student oriented) drinking spots congregate around Bway Square cause that was the first area to be renovated (though I suspect some of them have liquor licences that descend from sailor days). It was already a "destination" when i first moved to Bmore in '86. Further up Bway was more hardware stores and the like.

By Canton Square, you mean O'Donnel Street, I guess. Yup, its totally gentrified now - we tried to find someplace to eat there on our last visit, but found nothing suitable for the family and ended up at an Indian place in Fells Point. Back in the late 80s O'Donnel was still basicly Polish Catholic, but apart from the church that seems to be all gone.
