Iraqi appeals court upholds Hussein death sentence

Barring a stay by the Iraqi government, Saddam must be hanged within 30 days, according to Iraqi law.

My anti death penalty position aside, it's a shame they (presumably?) aren't going to give him a stay of execution in order to try him for other crimes.

He could be taken from his cell at any time now.
Within 30 days certainly doesn't mean it will be 30 days.
Seeing him on television, I think he finally understands that this is it.

Is it usual for the White House to pass comment on foreign legal cases? Maybe they usually do if it's noteworthy, but it seems odd.

The White House released a statement praising the court's decision.

"Today marks a milestone for the Iraqi people's efforts to replace the rule of a tyrant with the rule of law," said Scott Stanzel, deputy White House press secretary.

"We look forward to seeing the written judgment. Saddam has received due process and the legal rights that he denied the Iraqi people."

The White House doesn't exactly praise the decision of a death penalty being enacted, rather it praises that a court decision was made at all. Unless there is more in the statement that is not printed here.

It's not unusual at all, and especially not for having been instrumental in his capture.

I was thinking it would be better to remain independent than say "Yeah, kill the bastard". It strikes off influencing a foreign court when no influencing is wanted or needed.

Although the impression is more given by the media than it is by the wording of the actual White House statement

People are volunteering left and right to pull the lever.
There's so many Iraqi's that want the honor, it's unbelievable. It wouldn't surprise me if they hang him over and over just to give people a chance to do it.
