I live in a large residential quarter in which most facilities (basically everything you need for day-to-day life: a large mall, a health care centre, a cultural centre, several schools and churches, a mosque, a library, police station, post office, petrol station, sports facilities, etc) are located in one large central area and everything in a wide radius around that is pretty much just houses -- though on the outermost edges there are some shops and other facilities again (cemetery, community gardens, sports facilities, etc). I live about 10 minutes walking from the central area.
But since my particular corner of this quarter is sort of an outcropping that's furthest removed from the centre there are a few 'local' facilities as well, all within 2 minutes of my place:
- two elementary schools with shared facilities (playground, basketball court, football field, sport hall, in election times a polling station)
- a small playground (separate from the schools)
- a dog walking field and some other random green areas (more than just a patch of trees but 'park' would be too big a word)
- a supermarket with facilities (parking lot, loading bay, recycling facilities)
- post box
- bus stop
- vet practice
- arts & crafts shop
- hair dresser
- ice cream vendor
- some currently empty shopping space that the supermarket recently moved out of but noone else has moved in yet
- "guided independent living facility for disabled youth" (which basically means an apartment block where mildly retarded twenty-somethings live under supervision -- no, that doesn't include me )
- canteen for neighbourhood meetings and the like
Just outside the two-minute radius on the edge of town are a petrol station, two car dealers/repair shops, a caravan dealer/holiday shop and a company that makes outdoor advertising signs -- and they're about to start construction on a new commercial area with some more shops.
