Here you go, Asher. Something else for you to gripe about.

Mom has son arrested for allegedly playing with present before Christmas

    Updated: 8:58 p.m. MT Dec 5, 2006

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A fed-up mother had her 12-year-old son arrested for allegedly rummaging through his great-grandmother's things and playing with his Christmas present early.

The mother called police Sunday after learning her son had disobeyed orders and repeatedly taken a Game Boy from its hiding place at his great-grandmother's house next door and played it. He was arrested on petty larceny charges, taken to the police station in handcuffs and held until his mother picked him up after church.

"My grandmother went out of her way to lay away a toy and paid on this thing for months," said the boy's mother, Brandi Ervin. "It was only to teach my son a lesson. He's been going through life doing things ... and getting away with it."

Police did not release the boy's name.

The mother said that her son was found in the last year to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but that his medicine does not seem to help.

She said he faces an expulsion hearing at his school Wednesday. Rock Hill Police Capt. Mark Bollinger said the boy took a swing at a police officer assigned to the school last month. He has been suspended from school since then.

The boy's case will be presented to Department of Juvenile Justice officials in York County, who will decide what happens to him, Bollinger said. His mother hopes he can attend a program that will finally scare him straight.

"It's not even about the Christmas present," she said. "I only want positive things out of it. ... There's no need for him to act this way. I'd rather call myself than someone else call for him doing something worse than this."
Little bastard needs to learn to follow the rules.

Wasting taxpayer money to make up for her lack of parenting skills. Of course, a Texan supports such action.

If he steals, lock him up.

If he opens a present early, punish him yourself.

Yeah, held in handcuffs at a police station until his mom picked him up. Wow... the waste of public resources... I'm horrified!
To us, it is the BEAST.

He's been charged with a crime and is going to go to court. Do you really think such actions don't take time and money best spent on other issues?

Unless this police department, unlike all of the others, is overfunded...And I seriously doubt the courts are sitting idle there, too.

          I knew it!
Did you read the article at all? Did you know if a child can't be controlled, skips school or whatever, the parent can be arrested? Or you don't care about that?

Guess what? She is parenting, and as effectively as she can.

I don't find it acceptable for people to abuse the public justice system because they lack parenting skills.

Sorry, Sloww. She clearly isn't a very good parent, as her behaviour here alludes to.

You call it tough love or whatever, I call it an incompetent parent wasting taxpayer money.

If she honestly can't control the child, maybe it's time to put the child in someone's custody who can.

              A kid who does things!

Of course, "doing things" is clear and specific, right?

For instance, if my son was uncontrollable, getting expelled, etc...I wouldn't buy him gifts, such as a, oh I don't know, video game system. Hello...

I actually agree with Asher on this one-- CONTROL YOUR OWN KID

and I know that my son won't be getting fancy video game systems if he's always misbehaving. Even at age 3 I am taking AWAY toys for misbehavior

I think the bigger issue here is the incompetence of many parents in general. The kind of woman who says her son is always misbehaving, yet she buys him gifts, is the same kind of parent that lets the TV babysit her child while she complains about all that violence on TV...

Why wasn't that boy shot? Are Texas cops becoming soft on crime?

I agree. The 12 year old kid took a swing at the cop. Why wasn't his head pounded into the cement? He showed more aggression than the drunken teenager, anyway.

Thanks for presenting evidence you didn't read the article, just responded to the thread title and taunt.

The grandmother has had the gift on layaway for some time.
The boy's actions have worsened, culminating in assaulting a police officer at school, and being suspended.
I doubt that the mother is reveling in this, and I would imagine she's in dire need of help.

Being a parent doesn't mean you have all the answers or can handle all things yourself.

For my part, I''d rather she get whatever help she feels she needs, rather than the boy grow up to be dead early.

Well, I read in that article the kid has ADHD for one.

However, that's no excuse so he should have been shot as a matter of self-defence.
