    Verto, I'm done with you.

Eh. I didn't see anything except the local name and assumed it happened in Canada, since you posted it and the articles talked about the guys being the equivalent to SWAT's or something like that.

Are they realy going to claim that they though a Playstation controler was a pistol. Its the very piece of property their investigation is looking for, are they going to say they hadn't considered the suspect might be using the stolen property at the time?
A "SWAT" team would not be carrying out surveillence. The team only does the actual entry-surveillence would be up to other units.

I would assume this is the result of poor or inadequate training for forceable entries plus little practice. MOst 'SWAT" teams in this country probably get little practice.

Their guns seem too high powered also, thought I guess not living in an urban environment the possibility of innocent bystanders getting killed by bullets going through walls is not as high.

As for the dog, officers commonly freak out with large dogs, so they get shot quite often unfortunately.

Yes, they should have been playing SWAT, where you have to actually try to arrest people.

Judging by their actions, I suspect they were playing NARC. They didn't feel like getting the bonus points for the arrest, and I imagine they were genuinely surprised when the dog didn't turn into a puppy and run away after getting shot.

Former Cop Charged in PS3 Death
                        By Kris Graft

A former North Carolina sheriff’s deputy was charged with second-degree murder for the December 1 fatal shooting of a teen suspected of mugging a person of two PlayStation 3s.

According to the Associated Press, 34-year-old Cpl. Christopher Long, a 12-year vet of the sheriff’s office, mistook the sound of a police battering ram hitting Strickland’s front door for a gunshot. He opened fire, hitting 18-year-old Peyton Strickland once in the shoulder, while another bullet ricocheted and hit the suspect in the head.

Police reportedly had reason to believe that Strickland possessed firearms, but it has been determined that he wasn't armed at the time of the raid.

Strickland’s German Shepherd, Blaze, was also killed in the incident.

Long was fired last week. District Attorney Ben David said that the deputy has been receiving death threats and that he is “widely known, respected and loved in the law enforcement community as well as the general community.”

Strickland’s parents said in a written statement, "None of these actions can bring Peyton back to us, but perhaps they can save someone else's child."

As previously reported, Strickland and two friends were suspected of following another college student home from a local Wal-Mart on PlayStation 3’s November 17 launch. The suspects allegedly beat the student and stole two PlayStation 3s worth over $600 each retail, but selling four times that amount at the time on eBay.

It is good that the authorities are taking this very seriously. Second degree murder seems a stretch though. I would have thought that if it is truly an instinctive heat of the moment thing that the proper charge would be manslaughter.

I think it depends on what the laws are in the area. And it's not like this was a stray bullet.

How does a 12-yr vet mistake the sound of a battering ram on door as a gunshot?
