  • Do you have what it takes to become a citizen?

    So how did you do?
    I'm proud enough I got 85%. It's not a blow-off test.

When immigrants want to become Americans, they must take a civics test as part of their naturalization interview before a Citizenship and Immigration Services officer. The questions are usually selected from a list of 100 sample questions (see at http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/English.pdf ) that prospective citizens can look at ahead of the interview (though the examiner is not limited to those questions). Some are easy, some are not. We have picked some of the more difficult ones.
Should you be welcomed immediately to the Land of the Free or sent home for some more homework? Find out!
(PLEASE NOTE: These questions are as asked on the official United States Immigration and Naturalization Services Web site. Candidates are not given multiple choices in the naturalization interview, which is conducted orally.)

You answered 85% of questions correctly. Here's your rating:

0-20%: Maybe you're still thinking too much about the Old Country.

25-40%: Mmmm. Do you really want to be a citizen? This kind of performance isn't going to impress those nice immigration folks.

45-60%: Not too bad, but you really need to break out the civics books again -- word is, the INS is looking for an 80 percent score.

65-80%: Hey, you may make a good citizen yet! Look at your wrong answers and a little revision should do the trick.

85-100%: Welcome to the United States! (And, truth be told, you know more about this great land than most Americans.)

The form for the INS Naturalization was a total guess though.

and I embarrassed I'm almost forgetting some of these. I really had to claw the dark reaches of my brain for some of these.

      #8 I'm unsure of

#19 how am I supposed to know this? I'm already a citizen.

The one that gave me the hardest time, that I got correct, was the original 13 states.
I got it down to 2 by eliminating ..... one of the answers in one, and one of the answers in another.

I missed chief justice. I remember missing that one.

I got 100%, but one of the questions is poorly worded: How many changes or amendments are there to the Constitution?

Changes and amendments are not the same thing, I would argue, because the document has been changed less times than it's been amended. For example, the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments, was only one change, because they were all adopted as a package.

Also, you might count the 17th and 19th amendments as 0 changes taken together (I think those are the numbers)

                      EDIT: 18th and 21st, I mean...

#8 and #19 were the ones I didn't know. None of it really is applicable to deducing whether life in the US is for the applicant though. Well, other than being written in English I guess.

There should be questions about line etiquete at theme parks. Operating remote controls. How to swipe a credit/debit card through those little machines.... you know, relevent stuff!
