No thread on this yet? Really?
Just got back from Casino Royale. It's freakin' amazing -- easily the best Bond film ever. Its closest cousins are From Russia With Love and especially On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which are also the Bond films that are truest to the books. Fantastic action sequences, great characterizations, real themes -- it's actually a Bond with intellectual and moral heft. Plus, the first chase scene is like something out of Bullitt or The French Connection, but without cars. There were one or two false notes, sure; Mathis "narrating" the poker betting was truly irritating, and
was beyond belief. But compared to the cartoon that Bond films have become, this was an exercise in high realism, and a hell of a ride.
