Actually I think the code which grants US citizenship to anyone born in the US is in the main body of the Constitution, however it was slaves weren't included prior to the 14th Amendment.

You guys know that these things are all just baloney ponying to voters, right? Nobody expects any of this @#%^ to pass (or will vote on it, get it overruled by the courts, and then say, "Well, we passed tough immigration laws" ...)

That school piece about Douglas is probably pure horse#$% anyway. Nobody crosses (illegally) on a daily basis. If they're US citizens, then they are entitled to the benefits of such citizenship.

It's like I'm taught at work about shoplifters who bring back stolen merchandize to return for store credit (which they'll use to buy DVDs and sell them on the street) ... we take them back, because we can't be 100% sure this guy's a crook. It's our job to stop them from *stealing* the merch, not to attempt to change the rules once it's gone. If you want to stop illegal immigration ... stop it. Don't play around with the kids for Christ's sake. They're little kids, it's not their fault their parents are trying to scam the state ... maybe they'll grow up and be a boon to the society. Or, we could ban them from education and guarantee they'll be on the dole. Yeah, that's smart.

The solution to Illegal immigration is to work at making those who have illegally immigrated legal. That means documenting them, and introducing them into the beaucracy.

How many people are on one side of the pot debate and the other side of the illegal immigration debate ...

Oh, I just used that as an example of the stupidity I guarantee you that most anti-immigration activists would, if asked, support denying education to those kids.

The legislation posted in the OP is meaningless, as I commented in the first sentence. None of it - not a one - is remotely constitutional, and most of it won't be passed since not all congressmen or women are complete idiots about these things. It's just free airtime for their side, that's all.

I meant "can" in the normative sense. Obviously its possible for the government to **** all over the Constitution (poor poor 4th and 6th ammendments).

If you are supporting legalizing pot to tax it (and regulate it), then you should support legalizing illegal immigration, for the same reason. (IE, some sort of work permit or somesuch.)

I am in favor of immigration, I am against drug use.

I recognise there are issues with both (issues dependent on them being illegal). I think that the immigration problems are only relate to it being illegal, I think the problem with drugs is inherent in the drugs... (and are more minor for more minor drugs.. like Tabacco/Alcohol/Caffiene/Pot)

Yes, the same reasoning is claimed. And if I accepted the point that recreational drug use was fine, I would be in favor of legalizing it also. I have seen peopel who have not been trouble for drug use, and generally it is not a positive thing, even then.

Immigration, on the other hand, is always positive.

Well, in that way Snoopy is right.

How they are different is that immigration is inherently good, drug use is more towards bad (responsible drug use, which is possible for some drugs, is neutral... I am mostly talking about heroin/PCP/etc)

Err... because they are paid over the table and hence easier to have them pay taxes (W2's, payroll taxes, etc).
