Well, the Bush admin was also dubious, as per their campaign in 2000. And their support from that portion of the right that opposed the Kosovo operation. Etc, etc. I am extremely dubious of invading and occupying other countries with an administration that doesnt believe in nation building. Thats setting the thing up to fail.

As Ive said before, we are likely to enter an era when your reluctance about intervention will be held by many. This will cost lives, wholesale, around the world. It will likely also weaken the security of the United States of America. Mr Donald Rumsfeld will have that to answer for, before the dock of history.

      Sorry if I sound bitter.

Since I'm generally anti-intervention, I disagree with you to an extent. But on this I think we do agree:

By fighting an unnecessary war, mismanaging the diplomacy before it and the occupation after it, this admin has badly damaged our ability to engage in necessary wars/interventions in the future. The key, of course, is what you deem to be "necessary."

This, in addition to the elections could mean that happy days may be not far off in the future.

What?!?? He's cutting and running? Whatever happened to stay the course??

I always thought Bush kept him on because it'd be hard to find someone else to take all the flak.

Rummy did a pretty good job of being the lightning rod. He'll probably get a medal for it.

                            I.....told.....you.....so.

Read the book "Fiasco" by Thomas Ricks - who has been a report for both the WSJ and the Washington Post. Rumsfeld has always been incompetent, not only in his vision for our military and in his understanding (lack thereof) of asymetric conflicts, but in how he handles disagreement. Rumsfeld seems to be unable to entertain the notion that maybe, just maybe, the career officers and intelligence might just possibly have a good reason when they have the temerity to disagree with him. He knows he is right, and history has proved him to be MUCH less capable then his own egotisitcal certainty. For me, of course, this comes a trifle late. History will judge Rumsfeld even worse than McNamara. I hope, like Westmorland, he lives long enough to see his reputation become one of utter incompetence, and for him to realize history will see him as one of the worst individuals to ever hold the office of Secretary of Defense (and preemptive Assaults).

My comment above does not mean A. I accept that we cant salvage the situation or B. that arent a whole bunch of contingencies that could have gone better even with Rummys incompetence. But Im still bitter about the incompetence.
