YEp. Rummy was correct in the need for a fast response military except when it came to matters of long term rebulkding and pacification.Originally posted by PLATO
Not a chance.
The American objection has never been to the boots on the ground...it has been to the stupid way they have been used. Rummy has to bear the responsibility there.
Oh...and Clinton's "Cruise missle" strategy just worked oh so well to.
He got into a spat initially with Shinseki over just such a matter. Shinseki was an old school tanker that just happens to be correct when it comes to matters of occupation. Shinseki was wrong about the need to have more traditional set piece miliatray but right in that it would necessitate having enough troops to do the policing afterwards.
I doubt however Pelosi will see the matter in this view and at this point it may be too late anyway."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

There is much speculation that she will tone down her liberal leanings for the next two years to try and set up a democratic Presidential candidate. If she can accomplish this and a democratic President comes in, then it will complete one of the quickest major power shifts in a very very long time.Originally posted by Ogie Oglethorpe

If, on the other hand, she tries to push policies that are far left, then the American public may very likely make the dems a two year bump in the Republican march.
Om Iraq...it is to late to make anybody feel good about it and too late to quit. It depends on what we intend to ask of our military. If we aren't planning on occupation/reconstruction, Rummy's ideas were good - a fast, flexible, powerful but relatively small military. But then we went and invaded Iraq, which called for a larger, more traditional force...
If we had stayed away from the occupation/reconstruction thing, as Bush initially wanted to pre-9/11, Rummy's style might've worked well. But Iraq's just too big and populous, it seems.
If we'd managed a bigger coalition... if, if, if. Anyway, I'm certainly glad he's out. To bad his boss gets to stay.

as im sure youre aware i like Joe ALOT, but putting a bureaucracy the size of DoD into the hands of a man whos executive experience consisted of running the Conn States Attorneys office, would perhaps not be the best idea. In some ways SecDef requires an experienced exec more than the White House does.Originally posted by Imran Siddiqui

What I mean is that Clinton was very wuzzy about boots on the ground. He had no problems with killing brown people, but as soon as there was a single dead American, he pulled out. Thus the cruice missiles.Originally posted by PLATO

So it will be interesting to see if a new strategy means more boots on the ground or less. I would support more boots, but I believe it's too late, as the damage to the "hearts and minds" is already done.
