Indeed, most of the embarrassment is the US', but they seem to have swept most of it under the carpet by effectively gagging him and generally perverting the course of justice - so nothing new there...

It is frankly laughable that although he's killed hundreds of thousands of people, he only gets charged with the deaths of a hundred or so people after an attempt on his life.

But we all know the reasons why, even if many on this board seem determined to bury their heads in the sand...

Today's appearance in court of Saddam highlights the dilemma facing the US sponsored court and the Iraqi authorities - whether to carry out the death sentence in the first case, which concerns the murder of 148 people from the town of Dujail, or whether to wait until the genocide trial is complete.

The Iraqi Government has made it clear they want Saddam executed as soon as possible...
          Ahem.

You can only execute the guy once. 100 convictions are as good as 1000.

As far as the USA locking him up, that's Iraq's call, not the USA's.

Well justice is hardly being done if he only stands trial for a fraction of those that he has killed...

What about the Kurds - are they not allowed closure as well?

USA removed him from power for breaking a Cease Fire.
Iraq tried him, Iraq convicted him, Iraq will punish as they deem proper for the case.

I thought so. Especially given the fact that the trial against him for Anfal is still going on unless you actually have information to the contrary. It's not my fault you don't keep up with the news.

Actuaslly he's about to go on trial for the massacre of Kurds. Consider though that if his execution is delated that will allow his supporters more time to wreak havoc in the streets of Iraq. How many extra deaths is it worth?

I can't imagine how putting off his execution will save lives.
