    • TORONTO (CP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs move up to be Canada's best NHL team. Our totally subjective and weekly ranking of the league's 30 clubs:

      1. Buffalo. Tops in the NHL with a whopping 4.47 goals for per game.

      2. Anaheim. Surprise, surprise, Chris Kunitz leads Ducks with eight goals.

      3. Nashville. You want hot? 10-1-1 since opening the season with three losses.

      4. Dallas. The NHL's stingiest team with only 1.81 goals against per game.

      5. Atlanta. Top three scorers in the NHL before Tuesday's games.

      6. San Jose. Patrick Marleau on fire with eight points in last four games.

      7. Toronto. Tomas Kaberle the top scoring defenceman in the NHL.

      8. Montreal. Doesn't matter who's in goal, Habs keep winning.

      9. Minnesota. Manny Fernandez has answered the call as No. 1 goalie.

      10. Detroit. Special teams not up to snuff despite solid record.

      11. New Jersey. Attendance down 12 per cent from last year despite solid start.

      12. Carolina. The ageless Rod Brind'Amour leads the 'Canes in scoring. Amazing.

      13. Tampa Bay. Quietly on a roll with nine of a possible 10 points in last five games.

      14. Calgary. Will everyone leave Jim Playfair alone now?

      15. N.Y. Rangers. Top minute man? None other than Michal Rozsival at over 23 minutes a game.

      16. Washington. After a hot start Alexander Semin has gone 10 games without a goal.

      17. Edmonton. Lucky Ryan Smyth wasn't more seriously hurt in Denver.

      18. Pittsburgh. We like Sidney Crosby's chances to win the NHL scoring title.

      19. Vancouver. Marc Chouinard a big disappointment so far this season.

      20. N.Y. Islanders. Miro Satan only has two goals.

      21. Ottawa. Take away the wins over the Leafs and the Sens are 3-10-1.

      22. Colorado. Slumping Avs have dropped four of five games.

      23. Los Angeles. Sean Avery playing the best hockey of his career.

      24. Boston. Stanislav Chistov might be a sneaky pickup.

      25. Chicago. Five-game road trip starting Thursday could make or break season.

      26. Florida. One win in their last eight games.

      27. St. Louis. Lee Stempniak having a fine season.

      28. Columbus. Gerard Gallant gone, such a predictable firing.

      29. Phoenix. The injuries keep piling up.

      30. Philadelphia. Dead last in the NHL with only 2.06 goals per game.
I know its subjective. Anyone have a particular quibble? It does seem these do weight the last few days more so teams can be higher than their place in standings although the 2 do correlate fairly closely (no surprise at this stage)

I do think its a reasonable reflection of where the teams stand

      • Fairly reasonable, though Anaheim is a stronger team than Buffalo. Can we take a look at who Buffalo has to play, to temper the opposite opinion?

Oh, and Vancouver should be much nearer the bottom. For a team to lose the game they did against Calgary, especially given how horribly we played EVERY period, is hilarious. Plus, this city is full of inferiority complex Vancouverites who can't hack it in their own economy, need to work here to survive, yet still can't keep their "laid-back" drawling mouthes shut about how much they hate the Flames

Luongo is crashing. And there's nothing else on-line to save the Canucks this year, boys! Better change your logo AND your colors again!

        • 7.) Toronto??? All power to them for a better season, but Seventh in the league? Nooooo..

9.) Minnesota. Fleeting glory, IMO. They'll knock an old hand out of playoff contention in the NW this year, but they're not going to end up a top 10 team

16.) Washington rated higher than Pittsburgh is a definite problem

yup-- But Iginla looked good from the start-- Its Tanguay that is coming around IMHO

Add that to an Amonte that looked energized and having Huselius use his immense offensive talent to actually score and you have a Flames team on a roll. Huselius still bugs me since he does something pretty amazing and you wonder where the guy has been.

I am still troubled though by the Flames overall lack of offense . Last night they were again outshot and although that can be decieving as the Flames had better chances and some nice goals, it still bugs me.

To me, to be a top top team, you sometimes have to be able to totally shut down a decent team like Detroit did to Edmonton last week. I just have not seen the Flames doing that type of thing. They dominated Phoenix yes in a 6-1 win but there has been no such domination evident in this winning streak. Its some solid wins yes but no one finished a game with the Flames thinking 'wow they totally owned us"

I actually feel that way about Toronto and Montreal in the rankings. They both seem a spot or two too high to me. I'll put it this way . .. I don't know that I would favour either of them in a 7 game series right now against any of the top 6 in the west or Calgary for that matter.

Also Detroit seems misplaced at number 10. They are on a very impressive streak-- They have won NINE in a row of pete's sake

It sets up a great Matchup for Friday as the Flames have won 5 in a row and host Detroit-- and I have tickets

But Montreal is going to finish strong this year.

                      • From TSN's ice chips!

Jarome Iginla, Andrew Ference and Miikka Kiprusoff did not skate in Wednesday's short practice. Most of the team is headed to the Alberta Children's hospital to face the Townsend Tigers (children that stay and go to school in the hospital) in their annual wheelchair hockey game. The Flames current 5 game win streak is in serious jepeordy as the Tigers have had their number. Calgary is 0-for-24 against the Tigers. Defenceman Mark Giordano has been sent down to the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights of the AHL.
