Arkansas has tougher games coming up, so has the chance of working itself into the mix. But I refuse to reward a team for something that it has not yet done.
Thank you for ranking Cal in your top-10 and making your idiocy known to all.

I don't care who you are, you don't get into the top 10 after losing to Arizona in football. That's the very same Arizona team that lost to LSU 45-3, against the very same Cal that lost to Tennessee 35-18 (in a game that wasn't even that close). I think there's something wrong with Sagarin's SOS numbers.

    • I bear no responsibility for Arkansas' schedule. So far, it has played 1 I-AA team and 2 I-A teams that are ranked well behind most I-AA teams.

If you wish to find an alternative SOS indicator, then be my guest and do so. I think the NCAA has such an indicator.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

          • So....a team that loses to Arizona belongs in the top 10?

            • Given the SOS of the alternatives, you bet.

                • Yea, ESPN poll is out, and both the AP and ESPN polls are very similar to the top-10 that I put out last night.

I guess we're all wrong, and should have an Arizona-losing Cal team in the top 10.

There most definately is. If you look at the Sagarin SOS ratings, Pac-10 teams DOMINATE the top of list. Stanford has 1, USC has 2, Washington has 3, Cal has 4, Arizona has 5, Washington State has 6, UCLA has 7, Oregon has 10. I'm sorry, but the Pac-10 is no where NEAR that good. Now I tend to defend the Pac-10 against the SEC homers, but even I'm not that insane.

edit: btw, I just realized that the Sagarin ranking which is used by the BCS, Rutgers, yes Rutgers, is #2, behind Michigan.

                          My votes.

                          1. OSU
                          2. Michigan
                          3. USC (tough competition gets the props) +1
                          4. Notre Dame (tough choice between ND and Fla) + 2
                          5. Florida
                          6. Wisconsin + 4
                          7. Rutgers (New)
                          8. Cal -5 (tough competition gets the props)
                          9. West Virginia (New)
                          10. Arkansas (New, weak competition)
I'm not understanding why Louisville is not on your list, Dan, using your stated reasons for ranking. Louisville has 1 loss and their Sagarin SOS is 24th. Which is only 2 places behind Notre Dame's SOS (22nd). At the very least, it is above Arkansas' and Wisconsin's.

                          • exactly, which why a rationale used to explain your ranking using SOS is dumb.

                            • Take a look at the out-of-conference games that the Pac 10 teams play versus the teams from other conferences. I doubt the NCAA's SOS rankings differ all that much from Sagarin's.

                              • The Pac-10 is by far the deepest conference in the country this year.

BTW, Rutgers has a really good shot at the title game if the Coaches and Harris polls turns out anything like the AP poll. OSU-Michigan, USC-Notre Dame and maybe Florida-Arkansas will play each other before the end of the season, knocking out at least three of Rutgers competitors...
