Religion came up in a conversation with a teammate of mine, who is Catholic, and I noticed that every view of his was exactly aligned with the Church's teachings and his reasoning was always 'well the church says this...' and we got to talking and he actually believes something along the lines of that everything the Catholic Church says and does is infallible and that doctrinally it has never been wrong or changed its position on anything. I explained to him that not even the church had a position as fanatical as that, not since the last couple of centuries at least, and he was shocked and didn't believe me. I told him that I went through some years of Catholic schooling and that this was what I was taught, and he was shocked and appalled and that it was an outrage. He thought that the church was always right and questioning it was dangerous. I brought up the example of how the church used to believe that everyone who wasn't Catholic went to hell, and he said "No! That's not true! Where is your proof? Show me the documents that say this!"
Normally I could just ignore this and just accept the fact that he's an idiot, but this type of thinking is so dangerous that I can't stand for anyone to have it, I absolutely have to convince him that his position is entirely full of s***. I am by no means a religious history expert though and I want to have an overwhelming amount of evidence (I mean pages and pages). So I need a list of all of the atrocities the Catholic Church has committed that you can possibly think of. I am looking more along the lines of the actual church authorities, such as popes, instead of just Catholic laypeople committing atrocities. I am not trying to convince him that there were a lot of evil catholic people, that's a given, I need to convince him that the church itself was quite evil for a long time. And more importantly, I want evidence of everything that the church's accepted doctrine was in the past that was wrong. I mean anything that was blatantly morally wrong, and also anything that they once believed in that they no longer believe in. If I can provide a million things that they have changed their position on, he will have to see that it doesn't matter if you're Catholic or not, the fact of the matter is that the church is constantly changing its views on a lot of things and therefore isn't always right.
I know this is an incredibly broad and easy topic, and I shouldn't need any help to prove this (which I know I don't), but I want to have every bit of evidence I can get, and it would be nice to learn some stuff along the way. Primary sources are great too, because that is impossible to dispute on account of the information being inaccurate. Thanks in advance.
