You mean by requesting an instructor pilot to come along and interfere with his plan, then logging himself as pilot in command? (His prior contract had an out clause whereby the team didn't have to pay if he wasted himself piloting an aircraft, and he was a near ten year vet in the majors, so he knows rules regarding pension, insurance)

Also, take a moment to ponder the situation he was in, supposedly under a lot of stress due to a particularly nasty verbal controversy with his former teammates, conducted in public - and as I gather it, not on the rosiest of terms with some of his current teammates either, following their exit from the Series or whatever it was just a couple of days ago.

I won't fault you for this, since you don't get near the same level of baseball coverage and you don't follow the game. Lidle was a journeyman player who'd been around the block, played for several teams, and always had some degree of clubhouse friction with someone or other, partly due to his playing as a scab for a short period during the MLB strike in the 90's. Nothing at all atypical - there weren't any real high expectations of him in NY, nothing like that put on A-choke or Randy Johnson, so being a minor player in the playoff choke wouldn't be a big deal - the Yankees have been doing that for years now, and the blame and frustration hits their bigger players.

Lidle was the kind of journeyman player who would never do anything great, but always have a job somewhere, due to the perennial shortage of starting pitchers. He's a strictly average guy who made a real good living of being average, had a couple more years of decent pay, and was 75 or so contract days from 100% vesting in a pension that would pay him far more than most people make (around $150k per year) for the rest of his life.

These guys are pros - you blow the playoffs, there's a little frustration and heat from the fans, you go back and do your job and get paid seven figures from it. To say he was under any extraordinary stress is just a joke.

Ah, no he could not. That island is north of the corridor in which small planes are allowed to fly without having to have approval and guidende from La Guardia airport. Besides, it would take a very experienced pilot to even attempt to land on Wards or Randalls Island.

I think the building into which he crashed is pictured in that photo, the tall brown building on the left edge of the photograph.
