  • How is it exaggerations?

That flag is a valid point, but so is this other.
Do away with the flag, do away with the other.

    • Good point Arrian.

Even those who say the confed flag doesn't stand for endorsement of slavery or is an anti black statement and that it is instead merely a reflection on southern pride, it is devisive and hurtful to some. If we want racial harmony then it is best not to fan the flames as it were. (But then again I'm still a yankee).

So to those who feel it more important to show pride in the south at the expense of hurting others, I think them morons. (see abve my yankee-ness) I wouldn't dare think about censoring their right to do so but realize it serves to be a devisive act bordering on imbecility.

      • Thank you, Ogie. That's the basic point: why deliberately fan the flames? Surely even a fairly ignorant person is aware of the Confed Flag's connection to the KKK and like-minded groups, and its use as a symbol of hate... even if they don't think the flag really means that and they don't mean that by flying it. But why fly it, then? To be contrary, for the most part I think, but that's just a guess.

        How is it exaggerations?

You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.
        Who? What? Where?

You Call me "White boy," "Cracker," "Honkey,"

"Whitey," "Caveman" . and that's OK.
I'm not aware of many people who think that is ok.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you,

so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?
Huh? I assume this is attempting to say "so why is most crime against minorities perpetrated by other minorities (black on black crime)?" I'm not really sure it has any bearing on whether whites use violence against blacks... which as far as I can see is typically a claim made wrt to the police.

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Yom Hashoah You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi You have the NAACP.
You have BET. If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) . we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day .. you would call us racists. If we had White History Month . we'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to "advance" OUR lives we'd be racists.
While this is sadly lacking from the standpoint of historical context, I generally agree with the endpoint: at some point we've got to get away from this sort of thing.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching

for your race and rights If we marched for our race and rights,

        you would call us racists.
Yeah, ok, because there is a history of discrimination against white people in this country. This would be funny if it wasn't so ignorant.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're

not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride .

        you call us racists.
agree that at some point we've got to get away from identifying ourselves with our races.

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us.
Ah, I see, the writer is addressing criminals. I'm sure it wasn't his or her intent to paint all minorities as criminals, either.

But, when a white police officer

shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running

from the law and posing a threat to society . you call him a racist.
Because there is no reason to suspect the police of being unfair to minorities, particularly poor ones? Nah.

Why is it that only whites can be racists?
Again, how many people actually assert that? Is this a mainstream opinion? No, I don't think it is.

        Oy.

          Contrary yes. But to who?

IMO not to the minorities it offends, but moreso to the white effete northern snobs were I to guess. All that being said, who cares as it causes pain to certain people. End of story full stop.

Yes, we need to move away from identification that sets us apart.

              • Ogie,

Yes, there seems to be a very strong belief that NE libruls are trying to force you to live in a "PC" world and that it is quite fashionable to therefore be overtly "un-PC" and such. And there may even be a few such libruls, though fears of them are greatly overblown. Especially if you live in, say, Texas.

He uses strawmen a lot with you because that is the style of argument you generally use. When you are backed into a corner, you will use strawmen arguments to try to get out... and you use it to such an extent that it seems everyone is simply chanting strawman at you... but it isn't just a 'buzz' word, it is what you do.

Arrian is right... there is a white history year. There is no WET, because EVERY network is for white entertainment (how many black families are the focus of sitcoms in the Big 4?).

The reason this stuff is ok is because the 'mainstream' is very white dominated. Therefore a "White Entertainment Television" channel or "White History Month" connotates somewhat of a racist view (because if everything is white dominated, what would be the purpose of an exclusive white network or history month?)

                      • The point is that racism is still a huge problem. As such, we must compensate a bit for it.

I use to be in the camp that said, why have special things set aside for other races.. to give them a leg up? I was in favor of doing it based upon social-economic status instead.

And then I moved back to the south, and I see how it is different for people here. People here remember when they couldnt' vote because they are black, they remember when they couldn't get jobs, they remember when they had to sit in the back of the bus. Remember when they were beat.

America owes these people. Yes, the slaves died out long ago. But these people (who were alive in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s) are owed. In another 20 years, maybe we can do away with some of these things (it certainly sounds to me like the quoted person is a closet racist though).. but we can't yet.

EDIT: Let me add this. Even among Whites who favor flying that flag, I don't think all are against Blacks.
Moreso, I think they're against involvment by the federal government; and if their use is in fact traced back through history, the same feeling was present.

The North says it was and is about Blacks. I'm sitting here telling you, that isn't right. It was against the federal government. And I also say that slavery would have ended of it's own accord in the same amount of time we spilled brothers blood.

States' rights rhetoric by white Southern leaders leading up to the Civil War was a great way to justify secession; it sounded much more pretty than saying, "We are going to secede to preserve slavery!" Of course, in this case, states' rights and slavery really did go hand-in-hand -- they favored states' rights as a means to preserve slavery.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
