He always looks as dumb as a post. First with Sharon/Boomer. Then with Cally. Then with Felix Gaeta. It's not really anything out of character...

The only time when he hasn't seemed to be a moron is when he's working with his hands, so I guess I do see that part of your point... ...except when he works with his hands, he's either building something or fixing something.

    He's not a tomb raider.

Having her going to the temple instead of the Chief would have worked a whole lot better than introducing in this episode the new notion that he had any sort of religious background, let alone that his father was a priest. It was an unnecessary and rather annoying attempt to flesh out the Chief's character. They could have found a better way to do that and just left the temple to Roslin.
Because putting your President down on an unknown planet is the sensible thing to do .

It doesn't matter how much show knows about the faith and her past visions. No guarentee that she would have found anything out earlier than the Chief did. Until the nova revealed itself, no one would have realized what the symbol actually was.

And what if Roslin has the exact same responses as Chief? Standing there, not knowing anything about it, until she sees the nova. What, she was a moron then who was unvindicated as well?

When the fleet split into two camps, she went to the surface of Kobol. Cylons were present and when they realized that they didn't hightail it out of there. When Cmdr. Adama caught up to her group, he made the decision NOT to remove her, not to arrest her and not even for her own safety. He instead chose to trust her. In subsequent episodes, the writers have shown Adama trusting Roslin more and more, even if they still don't always see eye-to-eye on every issue. They very easily could have continued with that in this episode...

...instead, we get the Chief standing around, looking lost and like he'd rather being tinkering away under a Raptor. Sure, they could have left the story as him finding the temple and could have explained it as connecting to his past with his father, but they could have brought Roslin into the mix - maybe even at odds with Adama in the presence of the Cylons in orbit - and made the episode work well and make sense. This episode (well this and the cliffhanger I consider one episode for the sake of discussion) was good over all, but it could have been better without most of the Chief nonsense.

        • So we can get Roslin standing around looking lost .

I mean, Hell, this was a bit different in the fact that Adama was threatening to nuke the site if the Cylons tried to interfere. Yeah, nuking the Prez would have sat well.

          • It would have been an interesting decision conflict: Save the President, but lose the temple to the Cylons and with it, possibly Earth ... or nuke the site and lose the President (who we already know from several episdoes isn't supposed to live long enough to see Earth) for sake of protecting Earth from the Cylons?

Yeah, right... like Adama would actually nuke Roslin. The decision to arm the nukes would loose all dramatic tension if Roslin was on the surface. He'd never let them loose.

Didn't stop him from deliberately killing one of his own pilots in an attempt to prevent the Cylons from discovering his fighter in their territory, possibly triggering war...

(We already know the Cylons had been gearing up for war ever since the Armistice; that discovery of the Colonial fighter in their space would not have affected their decision to attack the Twelve Colonies other than maybe push up the attack date, but in that episode Adama was regretting the whole affair; felt responsible for possibly having done just that.)

                    • This is just latent Chief hatred. Why, who knows. But Roslin on the planet likely wouldn't have done any better.

Uh yeah... pilot vs. President. That's real equatable. Who'd take over, Zarek (no proof that he wasn't nominated VP after the anti-collaborator executive order, and haven't seen another person be VP yet)?

Eh, she isn't dying anymore, atleast not any more so than anyone else... The cylon-human-hybrid's blood or something cured her cancer.
