    • I think both of you underestimate the story of the Detroit Tigers. The Cards have a rabid fanbase, but they don't particularly matter here. People will be tuning in to see if a team that lost 119 games three seasons ago can complete perhaps the biggest turnaround in all of professional sports.

        Yeah, right.....

Tuning from where honestly? Detroit might be a huge story for the sports writers, but I doubt tons of fans from around the country will be eager to watch Detroit win. Just cause it makes a nice story to read does not mean people out there are going to spend 4 hours a night watching two teams they have nothing invested on. And neither St. Louis nor Detroit are particulalrly large markets.

Heck, the celebration in Detroit after they win will probably get higher ratings than the series.

That means Detroit better place their champagne orders now.

          • Go Cards!

            Low ratings? Couldn't care less.

              • This is compelling television. Especially if it goes deep into the series, to see if the Tigers can really pull off an incredibly massive Cinderella story (up there with some of the biggest of all time, like the '69 Mets and the Worst to First 1991 Twins).

                  • No, it was a serious lapse in judgement by Beltran. How do you not even swing on a curve down the middle of the plate. Wainwright really got away with that one.

To a baseball nerd maybe. To the general TV watching public? Nah. Last year the WS had a 11.1 rating, and that was a WS in which a team that had not won in 87 years playing, and from a mayor TV market (Chicago). I fail to see why the Tiger's story would be any more compelling than the White Sox story.

                      • The purpose of a sinker. Beltran wasn't the only one. He was just the last one.

Cause the White Sox had been average or barely above average for the last few years prior to their WS win. And the White Sox aren't even that popular in their home city. This one is a far greater climb with a team that people have been fascinated were still in the mix every day of the season since May.

It's the final out of the season, you swing the bat. Even if you can only get enough to foul it away... you can't let it go, especially when it goes right through the heart of the plate.

My simple bet, the ratings stay under 13, higher than last year perhaps, but lower than 2003 or 2004.

                              • Bases loaded. 95 MPH pitch coming neck high, then it sinks. It's easier to talk about what might have been than to do it. Beltran isn't a rookie. He got beat, with no disgrace.
