If you want symbolism: Brussels straddles the border between the Romanic peoples and the Germanic peoples of Europe. It's also located between Europe's 3 protagonists, Germany, France and the UK, without being part of any. It's a neutral city, like Belgium historically was a neutral country.
Brussels is the HQ of both the European Commission as well as the European Council, which are the EU's most important institutions. Most the EU's officials are employed in the city (over 20,000 people), MEP's spend most of their time there (3 weeks out of 4), and journalists who cover the EU are based there (to the point the EP even felt compelled to subsidize journalists to join them on their trip to Strasbourg). For those reasons Brussels is already widely seen as the de facto capital of the EU.
Finally Brussels also houses the HQ of the NATO is, and is consistently touted as Europe's 4th best city for doing business (after London, Paris and Frankfurt).

In other words: it's not out of arbitrariness why the petition's exponents speak of ceasing the monthly move to Strasbourg rather than the reverse.

the largest group in Europe are slavic peoples.
Belgium is de facto a vassal of France.
Belgium can hardly be treated as centre of Europe, esp. after Ukraine (and Turkey) join.
If Brussels is considered good for making buiseness, it's because of its EU status.

          Bonn

Has plenty of government type office space now that the capital has moved back to Berlin

If I shoot the last remaining speaker of a language, is it any worse than shooting a random Mandarin speaker? After all, in the first case, it's a 'way of thinking' being wiped out as well.

              Obviously

shooting the Mandarin speaker is much worse

I've always thought we should make Luxembourg our version of Washington DC. It's small, it's neutral, it's the geographic and political centre of the EU, the people are rabidly pro-EU, it's a wasteland now -- it's perfect for the job...

The fact that the entire legislature has to pack up and move hundreds of miles for one week out of four is a perfect example of the absurd way the EU usually works.

I like both Strasbourg and Brussels as places but for god's sake pick one and stick with it.

People romanticising about the joys of lots and lots of languages have probably not had to work on multi-lingual software. A colleague of mine on such a project, an Irish speaker and solid Republican, said "aargh, everyone should speak the same fookin' language, it'd be a lot less hassle and expense".

Every new language added to the EU adds another level to the pyramid of infrastructure required to handle all those languages.

How did the legendary Tower of Babel get on once all of its builders were 'liberated' by different languages?

What about Mont Saint Michel? That's a cozy place too.

I signed this petition too IIRC. Total waste of money, and if it annoys the French it's even better.
