I'm trying right now to look at it from their point of view. What exactly did the pope say anyways?

They see it as the west taking away their way of life (which to me is unacceptable with regards to their treatment of women). It's only natural for them to resist and attack those who try to take away their life.

No, but they're burning a Klansman in effigy, and KKK members were never human. Ironically, these protesters know absolutely nothing of the Pope's comments, and are merely expressing their dislike of obsolete hate-groups.

Actually, what they're burning there appears to be a representation of a Crusader...

From context it's hard to say what's unacceptable to you: their treatment of women or our taking their opportunity to do so away. But I'll assume it's the former.

Oh, and the Pope quoted a Byzantine emperor from shortly before the end of the Empire. Something to the effect of, "Every new idea Mohammed introduced was monstrous and inhuman. Such as the spreading of the faith by violence." Which is undoubtedly inflammatory, but apparently the speech itself was a condemnation of all religious violence. Dunno. Don't especially care. New Pope is definitely less of a sweet old man than Pope Classic, either way.

              I don't like New Pope.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I think that we're somewhat missing the point here. The protestors now, and the protestors during the cartoon incident, are never really protesting the specific incident in question. They're protesting the current world order. They live in areas of the world that have been marginalized, where poverty is spreading even as (it seems to them that) our wealth is spreading. So the one thing they have left is the dignity of their religion, and when they perceive that we are trying their religion, or degrade it, it is as if we are taking the last thing left to them. So no wonder they react in anger.

you're right. Of course, Umayyad caliph had some drawing inside their palaces (including naked women), and there were human drawings/paintings/sculptures in islam, mostly I guess by lately-converted folk like Turks or Muslims, or under werstern influence (mainly of / for the rulers), but the general rule stays
