  • What to do when folks can't see your disability?

One of the things that has really bothered me over the last while is this good friend of mine with a disability. I see how it bothers her when she has to write or type where all folks can see is the spelling and punctuation. Rather then trying to see the thoughts they see the letters, and ignore the fact that she has a disability altogether. To these folks she is stupid not struggling.

The funny thing is that I've experienced the same. Sometimes I miss words and what people say to me because I am hard of hearing. They label me as slow and dumb. I'd be interested to hear from the other folks on Poly who have similar 'invisible' disabilities.

Tubie isn't getting made fun of because she can't spell; she's getting made fun of because she can't follow (never mind create) a cogent argument.

BK i can unserstand when freaks get at ya for the things that are beyond your control. The girl needs to be aware that she is doing the best she can and as long as she does the best she can thenthats all she can do. Just as u cant do a thing about ur hearing she cant about her disability. It seems folks feel its up to u the one with a disability that u have to prove urself. Rather then the one with out accpet folks for what they can and cant do

Yeah my friend has felt the same way. She was glad that someone could finally understand some of her frusteration in dealing with most people who just couldn't get it.

I think to her it's more important that someone sees her for what she is, not how her disability makes her appear.

A big sign pointing out the disability might help.
