This is just ridiculous. Look beyond the laws- French Canadians outside Quebec may indeed have more 'rights', but in practice they don't have nearly as much access to schools, hospitals, goverment services as the anglos in Quebec.

The most pathetic thing about Quebec & France is their insecurity/persecution complex.

Sure, lots of people in Montreal speak English, and that has nothing to do with the wave of anglophone immigrants sent by Britain, nothing to do with the fact that the city was controlled by the English minority till the 70s.

Well at least the Francos here recognize English as the superior language and agree to communicate with it.

In general yes; however, I have a sense that an important balance that used to exist has been shattered and that the BQ and its cronies will stop at nothing to stamp out the practice of speaking English in Quebec.

I had nothing against becomming more French when I was living in Cannes, but here and now, I do.

Because it should not be necessary for me to become any more French to live in this part of Montreal. I certainly don't need it at the university. Why should a majority of the businesses within 1-2 blocks of an English-speaking university be staffed by people who prefer to speak French? Why should all signs posted be in French?

edit: Besides, speaking French here would ruin my accent

If you don't want to learn french, you don't have to. You're supposed to be able to be served in both english in french. If they greet you in french, speak in english and they'll switch to english. Maybe the difference from the last time you were here is that french is now the default greeting language in some places.

I know, the area west of St-Laurent is more french than it used to be. Since its obviously a problem for you, you can always hang out further west.

The real tragedy here is that I will one day forget my French entirely as the result of living in Quebec. I would like to take this opportunity to blame the BQ in advance for this right now.

indeed. Let me get this straight. You don't want to have anything to do with us quebecers, you don't want to bother to learn french, you long for the good old days when you had the anglos on one side of town and francos on the other, yet you're afraid of forgeting your french completely. And you blame the BQ for this sad state of affairs, a political Party without any real power to influence anything?

I suspect that you're suffering from culture shock. Where were you all these years, btw?
