The population of the rural northern part of Pakistan seems radicalized but I imagine the educated urban people are not so keen on religious fundimentalism.

A Pakistan based organisation , which was responsible for the Mumbai serial blasts , has now cells active all over Europe . It is only a matter of time - a few years at most - until they infiltrate America . And then it will be too late .

But keep deluding yourselves . You are the ones who will suffer , as we have , if you don't change . We in India have finally stopped caring .
If we pull the plug on Perv (IE we treat them as no longer an ally, stop aid and military sales, etc) Perv probably falls, and somebody like Hamid Gul, an ISI type whose openly supportive of the Taliban, comes to power with support from the ISI, parts of the military, and the MMA. At that point AQ has a haven much bigger and better than they had in pre-2001 afghanistan.

What do we do then. the US military is going to have a hard time occupying Pakistan on our own. Is India going to join in?

India-Pakistan war would not make that good a TV event...best to reschedule until there is more media in place in both countries.

It's silly to fault the U.S. for supporting Perv. They need Pakistan's assistance in making even half-hearted efforts to track down terrorists in Pakistan, and to ensure that things don't get as bad as they could in Afghanistan. All countries do things like this: India in Myanmar, to help with counter-insurgency operations and to counter Chinese influence; and in Iran, for gas (though we did vote, twice, to refer Iran to the Security Council, breaking ranks with other non-aligned countries).

I try to like China, but their supporting regimes like north korea, myanmar, and pol pot before the viatnamese kicked him out, makes it hard for me.

                  lol

Doesnt Pakistan have like 250 million people?

edit: No, only 163 million people.

It would be very difficult anyway

Didn't Pakistan recently assist certain western nations in the capture of a group planning a massive airplane hijack? Is it likely that Pakistan is now going to stop trying to prevent those goups from doing the same thing again? What has happened in the past few months to change their attitude?

It's a plucky little country, they've stood up to the U.S. and China.

TBH, I'm more offended by Indian support to the Myanmarese government than our willingness to deal with Iran. We should send our troops in and put Suu-Kyi in power

They're a tempting target for nukes for anyone at war with them, which is one reason why they've spent so much building up a capability.

The terrain is very rugged, the population is large, well-armed and unlikely to prefer the political program of any country capable of occupying it. Occupation is not an option even for a large country like India, China or the U.S. This leaves strangulation or annihilation as options. In a limited war strangulation might work, though how much pressure could really be brought to bear on a country with relatively little trade and a generally poor economy is an open question. Hence annihilation is a relatively better choice than it would be for other countries. The same can be said for Iran.

Two of the main candidates for countries who would go to war with Pakistan are India and Iran, who happen to be its immediate neighbours. Neither would want radioactive wind blowing back into their faces.
