Because there are some garbage points in there on both sides. I think very large winning margins don't communicate much information versus your run-of-the-mill blowout. Dan's ranking of USC at #2 is fine if he's doing an AP-style ranking based on performance over the season. USC is undefeated and has played a really tough schedule, so they've earned a high ranking.

I'd rank USC 2nd as well, if didn't think there were 8 teams better than them. USC will lose to Cal and ND back to back, and this discussion will be over.

And Tennessee doesn't need the SEC Title to play in the Big Game. Remember when Oklahoma did, even though Kansas State blew them out in the Big XII Championship?
