  • Arkansas won't beat Tennessee. Though they will beat South Carolina and have a great chance against LSU.

I mean the ELO says Tulsa will beat Oklahoma. So that isn't better than the some of the strange results in the Predictor.
It might be more accurate that a two-loss Penn State team would be beating Notre Dame at a neutral site this weekend, but would you rank them higher? No, of course you wouldn't, because ND blew out Penn State at home and earned the ranking.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • Why use a measure that doesn't take into account score margin?
Because there are some garbage points in there on both sides. I think very large winning margins don't communicate much information versus your run-of-the-mill blowout. If you had a system that started to value progressively less point margins greater than 8 (or whatever), then I might buy into it.

        • Dan's ranking of USC at #2 is fine if he's doing an AP-style ranking based on performance over the season. USC is undefeated and has played a really tough schedule, so they've earned a high ranking.

I think Sagarin's Predictor ranking does this...
          KH FOR OWNER!
          ASHER FOR CEO!!
          GUYNEMER FOR OT MOD!!!

          • I'd rank USC 2nd as well, if didn't think there were 8 teams better than them. USC will lose to Cal and ND back to back, and this discussion will be over.

So does anyone know if this is correct about Tennessee: they'll need Florida to lose 2 games to have a shot at the SEC title? ....Actually, does Tennessee even need the SEC title to play in the "national championship" game?

Tennessee lost to Florida, so if Florida only loses one game (say to Georgia in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party), based on head to head (if Tennessee doesn't lose again), Florida wins the SEC East.

And Tennessee doesn't need the SEC Title to play in the Big Game. Remember when Oklahoma did, even though Kansas State blew them out in the Big XII Championship?

If Florida loses to Georgia and then, say, loses to a 2 loss LSU/Auburn/Arkansas/Whoever, and Tennessee only loss is to Florida, then they may have a good chance if there are no other unbeatens (aside from one).

is good, but I don't think they deserve any higher than 10 at the moment. You guys are jinxing my team.

                    • Speaking of which, this year seems to have fewer unbeatens through 6 weeks than other years. Am I mistaken?

                      • Say what?! There are 9 undefeated teams (including 5 in the Top 10). That's not a few, especially midway through the season.

                        Through this week:

                        Big 12: Missouri (6-0)
Big East: Louisville (5-0), Rutgers (5-0), West Virginia (5-0)
                        Big 10: Michigan (6-0), Ohio State (6-0)
                        Pac 10: Southern Cal (5-0)
                        SEC: Florida (6-0)
                        WAC: Boise State (6-0)

                        • How many of those do you think has an honest shot at the national championship?

Ohio State/Michigan (depending on who wins the game between them)
                              West Virginia/Louisville (ditto)
                              Florida

And you seem to think Southern Cal .

So that's 6. That's a decent number midway through the year.

                              • Let's do a little exercise. What's the scenario whereby West Virginia, Louisville, Rutgers, Missouri, or Boise State secure enough points in the BCS to get into the title game?
