If you don't got options better than Charlie Batch you're in trouble? Huh?

      Charlie Batch QB Rating: 126.91
      Culpepper QB Rating: 49.60

Charlie Batch played like a viable starter.

How many games do you think Batch will play as a starter? Better have another QB if you want to do anything this year.

I played in a high school game where that happened. Luckily we were on the side with 3.

Batch also has some nice tools around him. Hines Ward, Heath Miller, Parker at RB (getting 115 yards on 29 carries), the Steeler's offensive line...

it's not as if he's doing it by himself...

                  15/25, 209 yard, 3 TD's

Miami wasn't able to do much with the run against the Steeler's D, which really affects Culpepper's ability to pass.

But then again, why look past the numbers and do football analysis?

Culpepper is a better QB than Batch. There is no doubt about this. Put Daunte on Pittsburgh, he could have potentially gotten 250-300 yards passing in that offense.

Put Batch on Miami, and he does much worse than Culpepper did.

Even though Fantasy football is about individual performances, football itself is very much a team game.

Agreed. And while I'm too lazy to put it together, I'm pretty confident that Batch and Culpepper werre statistically pretty even until the Heath Miller TD. Batch could easily have been the goat after that goal-line fumble.

While I agree that Culpepper is probably a better QB, but I don't think it's by that much. Culpepper has always been an overratted QB since he came to the NFL. For him, its always been about the tools he has to work with. He's had great teammates his entire career, except for last year, and look what happened (before his injury).

Some QB's elevate the play of their skill players (Favre and Brady are good examples of this).

Some skill players elevate the play of their QB (Culpepper).

Culpepper has great physical tools. Maybe the best physical attributes I've ever seen on any quarterback. His arm is insanely strong with good accuracy even on deep routes. He's quick, and he's very tough, one of those guys who can sometimes get hit by a defensive end and stay standing to make the throw. Physically, he has enough to become the scariest quarterback ever.

But he isn't. Here's why. First, he's often not patient enough to let routes develop properly. He'll sometimes decide too hastily to use his speed and scramble out to one side of the field, abandoning the routes on the other side before it's prudent to do so. That's a common mistake of inexperienced quarterbacks (Brooks Bollinger does that sort of thing all the time) but he should know better.

Second, he has a tendency to rely on a favorite target to bail him out. When under pressure in Minnesota, he'd often throw out to a well-covered Moss and just hope that Moss would come down with the jump ball. That works really well with Randy Moss, but Chris Chambers is not nearly as physically gifted. Chambers has good jump ball instincts, but Moss is significantly taller and has much better hands. I suspect if he expects Chambers to be a safety net, he's going to have trouble.

Third, he fumbles an astonishing number of times. So much that he almost negates the value of his rushing ability. He has a career average of one fumble per game. That's incredible. He fumbles three times as much as Peyton Manning, twice as much as Mark Brunell. While Culpepper has put up numbers as gaudy as Manning's in many respects, consider that Culpepper is due for about ten more fumbles than Manning in an average year.

But no matter how you cut it, his 2004 season with 5100 combined yards and 41 combined touchdowns is phenomenal. Culpepper can be a monster in the right circumstances. And if the Dolphins want him to be that good, they have to provide those circumstances for him.

Being 255+ lbs has something to do with that.

Miami needs a better OL to give him time to throw. He was a bit skittish last night.

Culpepper did OK until the end. Behind late in the game, he panicked and tried to force passes into a good defense that was playing the pass on every play. The INTs were the result of being behind wiht time running out.

I wonder what % of INTs come when behind in the 4th quarter?

I hate it when people say things like this.

Who has overrated Culpepper? List specific examples or don't bother making such remarks. It's an ignorant statement.

Do your own player evaluation. The vast majority of people who talk about sports are stupid, so it's very likely that some players are going to be "overrated" by said majority.

If you are talking about a specific sports analyst or scout that has evaluated Culpepper and you disagree with his (or her) assessment, then cite an example. Otherwise, please refrain from making such statements. They offer nothing. You criminal.
