              • Yea, a sad end to a heroic struggle. Many thanks to great co-belligerents (allies just doesn't sound right) the Soviets. NOT.

                Your turn.

                • Another aquatic-oriented event, and a significant one in history, at that. What battle was this?

Hmmm, this would be a tough one except I had some points of reference in the absence of any flags/heraldry etc...

                      1. The attackers look 'middle eastern', with Turban style headdress and scimitar style swords.

                      2. The boat is clearly c.15/16th C. in appearance cf. Mary Rose, Matthew or Golden Hinde. A caravel?

                      3. The painting style is sort of Tudorish, insofar as I've seen tons of this type of painting in the UK. Also done by someone who obviously has never been to the place in question: hence the attackers having a 'Tudor' ship and attacking somewhere with Gothic architecture...

Therefore, the only thing I could think of was the Turks/Ottomans attacking Europe during the same period using big fleets, e.g. Constantinople, Rhodes and Malta... (I have visited all three!)

Obviously the most important of these would be the Siege of Constantinople in 1453 by Mehmed II (Did you see my picture clue earlier in this thread?), and lo and behold we can see both our paintings in the wiki entry for the siege...

And there I am spending a while during work giving my reasons and Anaximander steals in and beats me to it!

                        You're up then...

                        (It's more fun guessing anyway...)
