        • First thought is Mary Queen of Scots, therefore Pro Vs Cath and she was forced to abdicate.

Though they appear to all be armed with muskets and cannon, so MQoS might be slightly early.

So I'm guessing it's more likely something that occurred in the 17th C...

Sounds like the Swedish Queen Christina, who abdicated to convert to Catholisism IIRC.

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

                    • The depiction was of the Battle of Carberry Hill, a fairly significant event in Scottish and English history.

Try this place, somewhat surprisingly involved in a war that took place elsewhere, which place also gave its name to said war:

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

                          • The flag looks like a Finnish one (except for the small coat of arms thingy at the cross' intersection) so I'd guess somewhere in the Baltic, but the fort itself doesn't reveal anything.

From the "somewhat surprisingly involved in a war that took place elsewhere" hint I'd imagine it's an old Russian fort that engaged British ships in the Crimean War's lesser-known Baltic theater.

Edit: didn't see Will's post, oh well.
                            Unbelievable!

it's the finnish state flag, as opposed to the national flag. It's used on different govt and defense buildings. The small coat of arms in the middle is a lion, used as a flag in itself for a brief time after their independence from Russia in 1917.
