I am nominally Jewish, and I would really like to be offended by this, but to be honest, I can kind of understand it.

We glorify ancient generals and kings who were undoubtedly butcherers too, and we do it without a second thought because we are removed from the horrible things they did by great gaps of time.

That's pretty sickening. It's also really silly, which takes some of the edge off, I guess.

sounds like this could be a good opportunity to increase awareness of the holocaust in India.

I cant be angry at an Indian who does something like this.

Now WESTERNERS who find this funny

Have a cadre of friends who constantly make oven jokes about you and you'll learn that, as horrible as the holocaust was, it really doesn't make much sense to be offended by it when there is no actual intention to harm.

What makes you people think the guy is ignorant of the Holocaust?

If the food is good, and service aswell, I'd eat there. I do wonder, what kind of food they serve? German or indian?

So will aneeshm try to justify this as somehow showing the greatness of Hindu society, or will he blame it all on the evil Muslims?

People in India hardly know who Hitler is. Hopefully, this will raise awareness, and the owner might be convinced to change the restaurant's name.

But I'm pleased that, for a change, our censorship-happy government is staying out of this.

They certainly can't complain about too much eurocentrism in their history lessons.

No, but we can complain about too much Indocentricism. Seriously, we need more world history in our history classes.

Wasn't India the origin of the Aryan race? It shows.

I dont know. Ive never been big on this kind of humor, whether directed against a group I belong to or to other groups. Of course its best to be witty and light in making ones displeasure known. Its not my part to criticise someone elses choice of friends or how they choose to interact with them.

I would say that harm is not only due to intent to harm - that someone with the best of intentions can do things that "desensitize"

I'll say this about being desensitized.

I mentioned that I was only nominally Jewish; my family is Jewish and we practice some Jewish traditions. I have nothing in the way of faith and the Torah has no spiritual meaning in my life.

Despite all this, I still identify with Judaism in a very specific way. I look pretty much like what a stereotypical Jew is supposed to look like and I am quite aware of the fact that, had I been alive in Germany in the 30s and 40s, I would have been subject to the Holocaust. I cannot escape this fact. I am forever branded a Jew because of this.

Dramatic portrayals of the Holocaust have a significant impact on me because of this connection that I feel I have. They move me and bring me close to tears, even though I am generally a very reserved and dispassionate individual.

The first time I saw Cabaret I was quite rattled because I had no idea what to expect from the musical.

Every time I go to the Holocaust Museum in DC I am troubled.

But these are things that are meant to move me. These are things that are supposed to have a direct impact on me, supposed to make me think and feel about that horrible, horrible time.

Ignorant or tasteless restaurants, jokes and friends, however, I can deal with much more easily. These things do not make me feel connected to the Holocaust. They don't pull any strings for me. They're just there.
