BTW what about Lamont do you think makes him a "fringe ideologue?"He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!

I agree with Oerdin that the primary system combined with the rampant gerrymandering are the one-two punch that devestates our politics. Basicly a plurality of voters have no say in our system other than a "lesser of evils" choice on election day. It's hard as hell for anyone from the center or anyone who doesn't embrace violent partisanship to get elected anymore. I liked Lieberman because he was a decent man, not because I tended to support his policy viewpoints. He's got the Midas touch.

And Ogie needs to deflate his ego a bit -- contrary to his impression, he's not enlightening all Apolytoners as if they never knew that hatred and bigotry knows no exclusive political group.
A) I don't beleive it was "Ogie" that used the word McCarthyism. Moreoever it was Lanny Davis a noted liberal commentator. Please don't attempt to ascribe his views as mine as I can assure you we don't necessarily see "eye to eye".
B) Re: No exclusive politcal entity owning franchise to bogtry and hatred. To listen to the likes of Lanny Davis and people of his mind set though one would think it an almost exclusively Republican trait. I found it interesting how minds can change when faced directly with examples and/or seeing how it was used to the detriment of your cause. Implication is in times past that these kind of activities were going on all the while but Lanny & Co. decide to turn a blind eye to it b/c their causes were being furthered by it."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

Affable centrist?
And again, Joe Lieberman has been in power quite long enough. So has Dodd, btw.

Ned Lamont isn't an hard-core lefty. Hard-core lefties latched onto him, seeing an opportunity to get rid of Lieberman. Recall that Lieberman's main accusation about Lamont is that he's actually more of a Republican. Heh.
He's a businessman from Greenwich. I rather doubt he's an extremist.
edit: and one more thing - I too think Joe Lieberman is a generally decent man. I just wanted to fire him. There is no malice in it.

The current state of the American electoral system is nothing more than an insidious conspiracy by the powerful alchohol industry to drive all sane people to drink. Bah.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Last I heard the poll data showed he will win as an independent. We'll see.

Like I said, it's going to be funny if/when he wins as an independent. I might even venture on to Kos or DU to see the reaction.I make no bones about my moral support for [terrorist] organizations. - chegitz guevara

With 48 percent of the vote to Lamont's 52 percent, Lieberman conceded last night and, as he earlier promised, said he'll now run as an independent. "We just finished the finished the first half, the Lamont team is ahead,'' Lieberman said. "But in the second half, our team—Team Connecticut—is going to surge forward to victory." Connecticut officials said it looks like yesterday's turnout broke the state's record for a non-presidential-year primary.

The people who are most visibly supporting him (Kos etc.). Admittedly otherwise he seems like a normal politician who is pandering to the fringe. I imagine that it's time for him to make a hard right turn for the general election.
Most visibly supporting him? I believe to be a "fringe ideologue," you have to, you know, have an ideology on the fringe, not to simply have a little support from such people. He hasn't staked out an ultraliberal position that he needs to backtrack from in the general.
And Kos is a generic liberal whose political ideals are very much in the mainstream of American politics. I'm a fringe ideologue.
As for the general election, remember that this primary had a huge turnout, nearly 50% of registered Dems. It wasn't a fringe element, but the mainstream of the Party that rejected Lieberman (however narrowly), despite the near unanymous backing he has had from Democratic politicos, interest groups, and unions. And most of that support will switch to Lamont for the general. And Lamont just got a great deal of Joementum for winning the Primary (and Lieberman now has the sore loser status ascribed to him). Last week, a Rasmussen poll showed Lieberman and Lamont tied at 40% for the general election (the Republican getting 15%); those numbers will move decisively in Lamont's favor very shortly. As of now, Lamont is the front-runner for Lieberman's seat."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "
