  • A Republican congressman from Minnesota (Mark Kennedy) is supporting Joementum. I'm willing to bet Joe's going to have more Republicans voting for him then Democrats come November. He is officialy in the same catagory as Zell Miller, a Bush-whore trying to pass himself off as a "moderate." The Dems should strip him of all his Senate commitee positions for backstabing the them.

The problem with term limits is that you have more inexperienced legislators and inexperienced legislators use lobbyists to write legislation more then experienced ones do, IIRC.

      • I think the far left is virulently anti-Semitic. I have personally been part of conversations with leftists who approached the issue of Israel racially, who viewed all Jews with hatred.

Now, we have had many conversations on this board on the issue of whether being anti-Israel is equivalent to being anit-Semitic. Obviously, one does not equal the other. But it is also true that many, many of the left sound just like yesteryear's Nazi's in their denuciation of Israel and Jews.

There also is the matter of the growing alliance between Islamic Fascists and the Left. They have common cause and a mutual hatred of Jews.

To any Jew who still calls himself or herself a leftist, you had better rethink your politics, as you now find yourself in bed with a pack of Nazi's.

At least it would be good riddance to bad rubbish. If he does win, I hope he does switch sides, so he won't be such a disgrace for progressives.

                1) You have wierd friends
                2) Please don't conflate anti-Zionist or anti-Israel arguments with anti-Semitic ones
                3) The far right is equally so, except for the religious far right, who have their own special problems
                4) Come to think of it, both "far" extremes are dangerous
                5) So just say no (to extremism)

Seeing as how he has something like a 90% Democratic voting record, what's the basis for your and Ned's view that he would be better off in the GOP? It's not as if we're talking about a Blue Dog dem here.

My view is not that he would be better off in the GOP; it is that we (that is, Democrats and progressives) would be better off. The Democrats will not win elections by being "kind-of Republicans," but by being a genuine opposition party, and Lieberman is an obstacle to this transition.

Of course, there are issues on which the opposition party should not always oppose; I'm not an advocate of total partisan deadlock. In this case, however, you have a great number of Americans (perhaps a majority?) who have serious doubts about the war and want withdrawal, and their interests should be served by a real opposition party that is willing to provide an alternative to Neoconservative foreign policy.

                    • I wasn't aware we had a coherent foreign policy, neoconservative or otherwise.

I never said it was especially coherent, but we do have a current foreign policy, and "Neoconservative" strikes me as the best way to describe it at this time.

Because of his near total support for the administration with regards to their policy in Iraq.

His voting record can be as fine and dandy as you like, but that doesn't change the fact that he is known as the most vocal pro-war democrat. That is what he is, as far as the public is concerned, regardless of whatever major or minor issues he has voted on in the past. They are irrelevant to the point I've made.

Yes. Of course, that "one issue" is the most important issue to many Americans; I don't know what the latest poll is on that.
