I'm looking for the 300-400 range...I did look at the Yamaha things. They look good.

I also considered getting a Onkyo(sp) receiver, as they're supposed to be fantastic. The problem is I can't seem to find any reasonably priced speakers to buy by themselves.

You might have to shop around for the speakers. I got a 5 speaker separates package and an 8" subwoofer from Energy (Canadian, IIRC) for roughly $700. The receivers in the $300 - $400 range seem to be pretty standard and of roughly equal quality across brands (Onkyo, Sony, Yamaha, etc.). This was about 5 years ago, but I think the audio market doesn't really change that fast. Make sure to adjust with an SPL meter.

For a receiver in your price range, you should really look no further than the Panasonic XR57. Check out the reviews on Amazon, Audioholics, AVSForum, etc.

For speakers, since your budget isn't big enough for separates, Athena Micra 6 should be a good 5.1 option.

Is there any entry-level receivers with Dolby Digital Plus or Dobly TrueHD support?

I guess that makes sense. Probably a lot of big sets were sold in Europe for the World Cup. We got all the games in high definition, so maybe y'all did too?

I doubt it. In any case, IMO, DD Plus will be wasted on budget speakers.

I would put it a little differently. The marginal difference per dollar for those things is not large.

Since we already have a home theater thread I thought I ask for advice on a replacement for my aging Denon AVR-1500 reciever. It was purchased new in 1998 or 1999 for a pretty penny but it no longer has the latest bells and whistles to it. While we're at it I should probably replace my Cambridge Soundworks surround sound set up and my Klipsch main speakers.

I bought this set up because at the time I was working at an audio speciality store and could get deep discounts on stuff I bought. Combine that with easy financing (even for a broke college student) and I had myself my first decent stereo system. The problem was the Klipsch speakers, which are massive beasts with two 12" speakers and two horns in each cherry wood speaker box, is that they are to bassy and not that strong in the midrange. At the time I was into rap and wanted bass but now I want accurate and undistorted recreation of sound. I can't really complain about the Cambridge Soundworks speakers though my current house is larger then my previous one and the Cambridge Soundworks speakers just don't sound big enough to fill the whole living room.

Any suggestions? I'm not sure if I should replace my Denon 5 disk CD changer or not. It still works fine but I'm open to suggestions. Ideally my new reciever should have lots of inputs so I can plug in my computer, my CD player, a HD-DVD player when I get around to buying one, and what ever else I happen to need. I'm also partial to the Denon brand though I'm open to suggestions.

Due to the miracle of modern consumer credit the budget is flexible.

I'm thinking no more then $2000 for speakers and maybe another $1500 for the receiver. Hopefully I won't need a separate amp. I will be needing an HD-DVD when the time comes but I can hold off on that until I get a flat screen set. Suggestions?

Well this thread is making me look hard at this Westinghouse-- frankly we had looked less at this than you since we probably won't buy for 2-3 weeks .

Oh and of course I'll fill you in -- Since we are both Calgarians buying 42" televisions, I'm probably your ( highly elaborate ) DL anyway

I'll be buying mine in Toronto instead of Calgary though, as both of my offers are out there.

Check out avsforum.com and search for the Westinghouse 42w2 -- there's two massive threads on it with tons of anecdotal reviews and pictures.

I have looked a bit and am somewhat concerned with some of the recurring problems and lack of customer service cited

Asher please elaberate as to why plasma isn't as good as LCD for video games. I was looking at the avsforum and it seemed like lots of people were buying plasmas instead of LCDs including people who had X-boxes.
