Then I suppose third world countries shouldn't massively deforest, pollute, and destroy their environments, whilst using as cover CO2 emissions as a specious claim that the US is the most polluting nation.

I agree that to totally compare aples to apples they'd have to list green house gas production per person but that is unlikely to make much of a difference. The US really is the biggest polluter by far and it has refused to sign Kyoto for economic reasons.
That's just a fact. I'm not sure why Kuci thinks stating such a fact is trolling.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

My girlfriend has just written a thesis on the european emission trading scheme (CO2), which we as Europeans like to throw the Americans faces (disregarding the fact that the US has a SO2 trading scheme) as evidence we're better than them. However the allotments per country/firm are so large that none of the companies can actually use their full allotment, so the trading seems silly.
You know.. aside from the transport (both plane and car) issues in the states I cannot really see how they can emit so much more Co2 per capita than us in Western Europe. Can anyone enlighten me where the other main differences lie?

I would mark it up to the fact that there is more economic activity in the US and that our economic decisions don't necessarily optimize for energy use.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

We don't have much of a steel industry to speak of anymore.Last edited by DanS; August 7, 2006, 19:25.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter.
