We definitely need to reign in our immigration for any number of good reasons. Just add less environmental destruction and resource shortages to the list which includes undercutting our own working classes with constant waves of cheap 3rd world labor etc.

It's not really the immigrants that use that much, it's the "average" American that uses much more than everyone else. Raising fuel taxes to European levels (in the U.K. petrol is about £1 per litre, which would be about $8-9 per gallon iirc). Raising road taxes significantly on larger engine sizes etc etc maybe a carbon tax or allotment.

Even the working poor (which most illegal immigrants are in the U.S.) use vastly more resources than the average person in the world. I support higher fuel taxes as well, but limiting immigration has many other benefits.

The problem is that you dont.

I went to the state of new york 2 weeks ago and I didn't even see one lousy recycling bin. OMG!
I went to a restaurant called Apple bees....WTF! Haven't they heard of cardboard!? Everything came in plastic bowls, it was takeout...and no where to recycle them.

          Ridiculous.

Even very steep increases in fuel prices do not seem to be reducing fuel consumption at all atm. I suspect all your proposal would be good for is providing tax revenue.

The US is actually ranked 172 out of 230 countries in population density. There is certainly room for a few more.

The issue of consumption is not so much one of there being too many americans as it is that people in less densely populated countries use more fuel for transportation and that people who are destitute can't afford to consume anything so they just live in poverty instead.

If there are fewer americans any savings in consumption will simply amount to fewer people being materially well off.

FYI, in many jurisdictions, the trash is sorted into recyclables/non-recyclables later, where it's more efficient to do so (by machine).

The US is taking an enlightened approach.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. Dan is right on this one. It's perfectly feasible to sort trash after collection but the eco-luddites won't go for it, supposedly because sorting at home "fosters discipline".

It doesn't greatly reduce fuel consumption in the short-term no (even though there's evidence that people are more careful not to take any unnecessary trips, for instance), but it does create additional incentives to look for options that are more fuel-efficient, thereby reducing consumption in the long-term. The fact that Toyota's cars are more fuel-efficient is cited as big reason why their sales are growing in the US while those of Detroit are plunging.

The world's poorest countries face a dramatic rise in deaths from disease and malnutrition as a direct result of climate change driven by wealthier, more polluting countries, scientists say today.

The US, which emits 24% of the world's greenhouse gases, making it the world's most polluting country, has refused to sign up to Kyoto on the grounds that it would hamper financial growth.

The US is the most polluting country in the world. Let me find other sources. IBRB.

I think we should take it as a badge of honor that we consume by far the most on the planet. It just means that we're richer than everybody else (save Luxembourg, Norway, and a few others).

I agree with you Dan, but you cant stay rich for ever if the environment dies around you. It's only temporary.
