Pretty much what I expected. Feingold, Clark, and to a lesser extent Gore 3.0 have been the guys I like the most. Feingold of course would be my favorite candidate, but I doubt he could win at this point. Gore isn't running, and Clark hasn't been raising very much money. The rest of the candidates don't excite me, except Edwards to a much lesser extent.

I think you are buying your own spin. McCain has the big name. Media spin or no, people remember him as a 'maverick' and that could make all the difference in a close race.
He'd do OK if he made it out of the primaries but I don't think he can pull that off, far too many of the republican base hate him with an unholy passion...

Indeed, the primaries will be key for McCain- he will win the election if he takes the primaries.

A lot of you people clearly vote what you think a particular party endorses. Too close-minded. Not for the individual. Unlike myself.

After reading up, I kind of like Senator Bayh. I think such a "fiscally conservative" (i.e., Moderate) Democrat could do well, if he could get out of the primary round. He sounds somewhat similar to our Governor Bredesen (as far as being an 08 candidate), another moderate Democrat whose name has been tossed around, but hasn't received too much attention.

If Bayh is the candidate, a certain someone on poly will be running around claiming America is an oligarchy

He'll never take the primaries, I don't think there's a single Republican contender out there with half of the negatives that McCain has.

                    • McCain has less negatives than Clinton.

                      • And what sort of negatives would those be?

War hero... Willing to actually build bridges between the parties and enact campaign finance reform... not a sore loser... actually loyal to the party even if he doesn't seem to agree with (or vote concurrently with) lots of their positions (I believe he stumped for Rick Santorum who doesn't really seem to be a McCain sort of person...), etc.

                        What more can you ask?

                        • Sorry to confuse you. Perhaps it would help if I said McCain has more positives than Clinton instead of less negatives.

I would be harder pressed to find a McCain negative than a Clinton positive, especially given things that I know about her from the 90's. If I had to choose between the two then McCain would be an easy choice.

Take a look through the comment sections of any conservative blog that mentions McCain, I don't quite understand it, but the conservative base really really really hates McCain.

                              • For example look here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-...osts?page=1,50

Not a SINGLE one of the freepers (at least that I was able to see from a quick skim) had a single good thing to say about McCain. Now I'm not saying that freepers are representative of Republicans but the American hard right really hates McCain and they'd rally behind anyone who could beat him. Also the basically unanimous hatred for McCain among the American hard right means that he'd have a hell of a time even being competitive in a primary...
