Gov Warner, if he runs, will win the nomination, IMO. He's a Southern Dem who is moderate and well spoken. I get the feeling he won't like the Republican attack machine run all over him.

Though if he's against someone like McCain, all bets are off. McCain, while a conservative Republican, has positioned himself in such a maverick role, especially in certain high profile areas (campaign finance, torture) that he can claim to be not like Bush.

Until the media turns on him, that is.

It'll likely be too late when the media finally does turn on McCain (and yes, he's probably due soon... no one gets this much good press without a slam).

You can already see it coming. They were pretty hard on him when he spoke at Jerry Fallwell's thing and they've noticed that he's backing away from campaign finance reform. He ain't gonna stay in their good graces (and thereby maintain the "maverick" image they've helped him create) if he keeps acting like a Republican. On the other hand, he isn't getting the Republican nomination if he doesn't keep acting like a Republican...

The press already soured on him for a bit a while back. McCain will get slammed as soon as all the lefties drooling over him wake up and realize he's a socially conservative right-winger.

Monica Lewinski in 2022 - she already has Presidential experience.

Question is how it is done. I can see the media once again falling for the 'compassionate conservative' shtick once again, but this time with McCain, who already has people believing he's a moderate because of his views on a handful of issues (while ignoring all the rest).

They only fell for the "compassionate conservative" storyline because they were sure Gore was going to win anyway. The Dems need a win bad in 2008 and they sure as hell aren't going to feel secure about their chances of winning, particularly against a name like McCain. I expect he'll get treated a lot more roughly than Bush did (in '00 at least).

Evan Bayh is a Senator for Indiana. He's been in the party long enough that he's got a nice committee position. He was mentioned last election as a possible running mate.

McCain is as much of a has-been as John Kerry. He had his chance in 2000 and blew it (not to mention most South Carolina Republicans still probably believe he has an illegitimate black baby).

Maverick? Please. That guy is as much of a maverick as MrFun is funny. Time and time again he has thumped the Bush line, especially voters will remember in the 2004 election, and no one really gives two rat's ****s about campaign finance or torture. Come on, Imran, even your own beloved Stephen Colbert called him on this one. As a 2008 Presidential candidate McCain is dead before he's off the ground.

Don't get me wrong. McCain is a nice guy, but he is no President.

I think you are buying your own spin. McCain has the big name. Media spin or no, people remember him as a 'maverick' and that could make all the difference in a close race.
