Wow. I used to think Galactica 1980 was just a nickname given to the second season, but it actually had "Galactica 1980" as the title in the opening sequence.

He just wasn't as good an actor as Edward James "My man-stache powers the fleet" Olmos.
So it wouldn't have been worth the budget to CGI him in.
I wonder when we'll get to the point where the technowizards can add in better acting skills.

Olmos is damn well deserving of an Emmy for his role as Adama. It's about time a sci-fi show took a major Emmy, and if Olmos's performance isn't deserving of one, I don't know what is.

Olmos is the man, but he'll never win an Emmy. I'm not sure his acting is good enough for a nomination. Remember, best actors are renown for their range. One of the reasons Adams kicks ass is because he has no range .

I don't recall the tewlve colonies being at peace prior to the Cylon wars. The reasons the Cylons were created was as weapons for the colonies to fight each other.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
I find that to be especially odd as the Galactica was one of the *first* set of Battlestars, one for each colony, and they started construction before the CYlon war.
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.
When the first Cylons were created, individual Colonies still warred against one another and it wasn't until the Cylon rebellion that the 12 Colonies finally came together in a permanent way.

Isn't that what the show is about?

It was my understanding that they were created as workers (i.e. slaves). The situation was similar to the early years of the Planet of the Apes movies. It can be said that the Cylons have a legitimate beef against the Colonials.

I remember it mentioned in the original series that the Galactica was over 500 years old and suffered from occasional maintenance problems such as fuel leaks.

That would seem to be correct. As the miniseries open, one of the text lines goes something like "They were created to make life on the Twelve Colonies easier".

I did get the impression that the colonies had been at war with one another or that such a threat was very real prior to the cylon rebellion. Anyone recall how long it was after the original rebellion that the cylons launch the massive attack destroying most of the twelve colonies? (This would affect the plotline of a possible "Caprica." That show, in turn, would be better as a mini-series. After all, its outcome is a known set of events.)
Love BSG but it is dark and very adult. No comparison to most other sci-fi TV. This is a good thing, sci-fi trying to grow up, but it is not light fare. With the possible exception of Firefly, most TV sci-fi is based upon heroic leaders conquering all and completely without emotional depth. I love that on BSG, all sides have a POV they believe in and are not just evil so that the good guys can look heroic. Babylon 5 tried that, but devolved to Sheridan saves the Galaxy in the end.
