Hezbollah, as fighting the ones who are destroying the country, will only gain support. And if not them - some other organisation fighting Israel.
So Israel should just sit back and do nothing, in the face of its population centers being targetted hundreds of times and its soldiers being kidnapped?

No Sir, once this campaign has reached its immediate objectives and a ceasefire is agreed to, public sentiment will be less favourable to Hezbollah than it was before. By how much, we'll see.

    • Israel should back off from the remaining occupied of Lebanon (Shebaa farms). Then Hezbollah could not claim it fights for liberation of it and attack Israel.

Israel left all Lebanese territory six years ago.

        (Shebaa farms).
        Not Lebanese.

        • But my question to the current situation is: How can the saving of two soldiers motivate the killing of hundreds of innocent civilians and the destruction of essential civilian infrastrucure?

The main goal of the operation is not merely the saving of 3 soldiers but destrying Hezbullah infrastructure, and bringing about a realization in the Lebanese government and public, that Hezbullah lead adventures can be very dangerous for them.

We can't break the Hezbullah will to fight. They are fanatics. We can try and break the support their actions recieve and the attitude choosing to "look the other way" on Hezbullah activity.

Saving the 3 soldiers is a tactical mission.
Stopping the threat from Hezbullah is a strategic mission.

Why not make this the first response, though?'

          News reports are sadly non-indicative.

Most of the targets hit in Lebanon are Hezbullah outposts, command and control centers and weaponry warehouses.

Of course it is much cooler to see on TV a burning runwy, than traeling to south Lebanon and showing the destroyed Hezbullah warehouses.

            • Half of the foreigners here are saying "Use the force, Luke", while others say "Don't use the force, try to think". It looks like most of them do not understand that Israeli leaders try to use the force and think simultaneously. Many jews beleive that thinking a lot is national tradition.

Wouldn't like to destroy a beautiful country.
We just need to get rid of a few pests supported by Iran.

I think that this showdown will not destroy Hezbullah, but might weaken it tremedously.

I believe that this is, for both sides, a repetition of the big thing - when Iran is attacked eventually.

                    • I also expect we'll see an attack or two on Israeli interests abroad by Hezbullah or Iranian intelligence (the real force behind Hezbullah) in the very near future.

Just Episode IV, 1977 should do nicely.

It was the apparent Force-confusion in your post that raised my suspicion. It's not about force, but feelings.

                          • Israel has threatened to turn the clock back 20 years, when the country was in ruins, has it not?

Yes, but did we do so?

                            • Winston, you did not understand. In my previous statement "force" is not capitalized. It is "the force" not "The Force". OK?

                              • But then your quote of "use the force, Luke" would be meaningless.

Either way, I realise I shouldn't have brought it up; I think this thread is too serious for us to be having such a discussion. Agree?
