Do you actually think your leaders want that? It was a chain around your necks the last time... and it'll undoubtably weaken the government to the extent that Syria will be able to take advantage.

I like Arrian's idea. Kind of like a "Stop in Belgrade" kind of plan that was bandied about before WW1 (which the Austrians rejected, of course).

      • You have a better idea? I didn't say I had the ANSWER, nor did I claim to be an expert. WTF?

Yes, I think that going into Lebanon by foot is a much better idea. Yours isn't a good one by any standard.

Incidently, I didn't say limit ops to aerial bombardment.

I was thinking that maybe southern lebanon could be controlled by a UN peacekeeping mission.

Oh, those UN peacekeeping missions! you mean like the one that assisted in the kidnappings of soldiers back in 01?

Wait, so you don't think that evil Israel is all about controlling Lebanon? this is like bizzaro-world!

In any case, this isn't a debate about "what the leaders of Israel want". I don't really know. I am more in a "what should be done by Israel" mode.

          • A senior aide to Abbas also expressed fear that if Hamas and Hizbullah managed to force Israel to release Palestinian and Arab prisoners, that would undermine the "moderate camp" and boost the popularity of the two radical groups.

"All eyes are now turned toward Hamas and Hizbullah," he said. "If they succeed in forcing Israel to accept a prisoner swap, they will score many points on the Arab and Palestinian street. They will become the heroes of the Arab masses and the moderates will have to step aside."

Also, aparently, to prevent Iran from supplying arms to Hezbollah:

MSNBC reports many believe those arms are coming in on a daily 747 cargo plane from Iran... and that Beirut International is the only airport in the region that can handle the large aircraft.

Gee... it might have made more sense to shoot down the damn airplane then instead of destroying the airport...

Going into Lebanon by foot was something I'd contemplated when I said "beat the **** out of Hezbollah targets for a while." The question, I suppose, is the extent of said ground invasion - how long, how far?

You think that Israeli troops occupying southern Lebanon for an extended period of time is a good idea? How did that work out for ya last time? I was trying to come up with an alternative.

I would believe that shooting down "civilian" aircraft in the air would cause an international outcry against Israel. For some reason, killing civilians on the ground is more easily accepted.

How to they identify and verify the contents of the airplane before shooting her down? Board her midflight?

Lebaneese gouverment has no power to do that. "Forcing it to it" by devastating the country is idiotic.

                        • Not if Hezbollah were to lose public support because of the devastation.

                          Worth a try I suppose.

Dude, this isn't nearly "blowing a country's infrastructure to bits"....
Israel has threatened to turn the clock back 20 years, when the country was in ruins, has it not?

                            • Oh yes, and would it be difficult for Israel to enforce a no-fly zone over Lebanon?

Edit - actually, this is probably a pretty stupid post.

Who, do You think, Lebaneese will blaim for the destruction - Hezbollah or Israel? Israel of course. It's obvious even if You just know the basic laws of psychology.
Hezbollah, as fighting the ones who are destroying the country, will only gain support. And if not them - some other organisation fighting Israel.
