*balanced budgets
*strict enforcement of immigration laws
*low taxes**

**Although I do believe in having an overall low tax rate, I also believe that taxes should be graduated. I believe that the government should repeal all regressive taxes (sales taxes etc) in favor of graduated taxes.

My mother remembers the days when "Eat up your fat" was the moral equivalent of today's "eat up your 28.7 vegetable varieties or else". Which foodstuffs are deemed good or evil may change, but the state just can't keep out of our kitchens.

I'm a conservative who's against the re-uniting of church and state in Sweden. Negative to most forms of organized religion and its position as a tool of power in society.

A swedish conservative? OK, that puts you slightly left of Che . Even the religious fundies in Sweden are lefties here. When I lived there I was considered right of Jerry Falwell while here I am slightly right of center.

My "conservative" positions:

I'm a fiscal conservative. I believe the budget should generally be balanced, although I'm in favor of (limited) deficit spending in hard times - but with the key stipulation that the debt be paid off during the next boom.

Hmm. That might be all.

Conservative is in quotes above because, obviously, many who purport to be conservative are not (the current batch of "conservatives" have made the "tax and spend" Democrats look responsible).

Traditionally it has been. It was one of Barry Goldwater's touchstones.

Then Reagan got elected promising to: (a) cut taxes; (b) increase the size of the military; and (c) balance the budget. He relied on the Laffer Curve, which purported to show that, if taxes were reduced, government revenue would increase. The elder Bush dubbed this "Voodoo Economics." Bush's analysis proved true, and in Reagan's first term, the U.S. ran up more debt than the rest of U.S. history together. At that point, Republicans argued that deficits were a good thing. Since then they became the spend-and-borrow party. Although many traditional fiscal conservatives have railed against deficits.
