Zkrib, I note that in LA, there's a successful ongoing unionization effort in your hotels. Just remember, everytime min wage goes up, Paris Hilton's inheritence drops a little more.

To reverse the thread title's question, I'm a self-identified rightist, but I support these lefty causes:

      - Homosexual marriage (duh)
      - Liberal immigration laws
      - Killing any absurd religious pseudoscience such as intelligent design
      - Liberal drug laws
      - My abortion stance is liberal by American standards
      - High gasoline taxes. **** SUV drivers. How do you like the gas prices now, huh?
      - Stem cell research

Probably more I can't think of right now.

It's not that Americans won't take the job for $6/hour. It's that employers won't offer these jobs for $6/hour.

My line of thought (if you can call it that ) is this.

              Hypothetical:
With minimum wages at $6/hour, employers cannot produce a product or service at a price customers will pay. So they hire illegals at a lesser price (knowing they won't and can't complain).

However, if the minimum wage were--say--$5/hr, employers could hire Americans, could still produce an affordable product or service and could be in compliance with the law.

THe things I support are generally unpopular to most people in general, so I don't know if any of them would be called "rightist". I don't really know or care what right and left is, anyways

But the things that probably are most often not shared by people who have view points relatively similiar to mine are:

Not in favour of drugs (including alcohol)
                Not promiscuous
Not terribly fond of the idea of abortion
Not in favour of gun control (unless it equally applies to atleast the police and ideally military aswell)

Gun control laws do apply to members of the police and armed forces.

When on the job? Well, I suppose that depends on what the gun control laws in question are, exactly. But I can't imagine many schemes that would allow your average 18 year old punk walk around with an assault rifle or carry a handgun around wherever he pleases. Unless he's wearing a uniform, of course.

Yes, part of their jobs. Key phrase.

The average 18 year old could carry a gun around on the job if he is a licensed armed guard.

Well, what I was saying, is that there shouldn't be any exceptions. Even if it is "part of the job"

This thread is reminding me of just how consistantly old-school liberal I am. Balanced budgets. That's it, really.

I have a couple of personal positions that in this day and age might be considered more Right than Left -- I believe strongly in personal responsibility, am impatient with victim discourse, and have no patience with identity politics -- but I think FDR would agree with me on those points, so I'm not sure they count as "Right."

How practical is it to expect police to work without guns when criminals have the largest gun market in the world to draw from?

The military not having guns is way beyond that.
