Just to clear up a question in my mind.

Do you urge circumcision as an alternative to prophylactics among promiscuous populations?

I see your point notyoueither, but I don't think the thread was really dead during those 6 days. Maybe dormant would be a better word, no?

Not active, but still some rumbling going on under the surface maybe.

It sounds to me like the study was completed. Please note the date. What separates this studies from all of those done before ( combined in Van Howe's metanalysis ) except Bwayo's is that it is a randomized, controlled, prospective study. Unlike Bwayo's study it utilized a very large population. It was about as comprehensive a study as can reasonably be done.

"Although the study shows promising protective effects of adult male circumcision in reducing HIV acquisition, UNAIDS emphasizes that more research is needed to assess the repeatability of the findings............ "

Would anyone have expected any other recommendation from an international gathering of researchers?

I think it's odd that no one has been able to find the details of this study, and the information we do have of it is the study is incomplete and they were releasing preliminary results.

I think it's odd that in the Western world this is even a consideration for newborn babies, considering circumcision isn't anywhere close to being something to prevent STDs like condoms are -- and condoms are readily available.

I think it's odd that every pediatric society in the world does not recommend routine neonatal circumcision, but you choose to ignore that.

Could have something to do with the influence of fundamentalist christians who often enough are against contraceptives like condoms and therefore rather allow their kids to be circumcised than, in later years, allow him to use condoms for sex.
(this goes for catholics and protestants alike, of course, as the catholic church is also against condoms [especially affecting many third world countries, where condoms might be available, but, because of religiosity, aren´t used])

A foreskin is not some sort of clamp or vice.

If there is some sort of size advantage to circumcision (which I doubt) I'd arribute it to the thickening of the glans skin through calluses. And I'd really prefer not to have those.

Nope. No on has made any claims about circumcision preventing other STDs.

Have you ever gone for sex twice in an evening, the later shortly after the first go? If in the time intervening the penis goes flaccid the condom pretty much comes off. Would you then put a new condom on before having another go at it? In my experience most people won't bother to replace the condom because it's a hassle and it's rather messy. Breakage and slippage happen also. IMHO condoms are rather inefficient protective devices because of the aforementioned problems. Having a backup would be nice.

                    • No. Are you incapable of "going for a second round"? I often hear in the office the same tale about a couple having thrown away the condom after the first course of the evening, then not putting on a new one. It's a common way of getting pregnant or getting an STD.
